We are seeking a passionate and experienced Illustrator to teach Comics Studio, a dynamic after-school program course designed to inspire students of all skill levels to explore the art of comic creation. This course will be more than traditional comics and include storyboards, as well as creative writing. The ideal candidate will combine artistic expertise with a love for storytelling and education, fostering creativity and technical skills in a supportive and engaging environment. This position is a part of the Cornish In the Schools program and the candidate will be expected to teach on and off-campus, including onsite at schools or organizations around the Seattle area. Depending on the instructor’s schedule, this position could potentially be teaching one to three courses a week. While this position is beginning this winter, we are searching for multiple illustrating teaching artists to join our “pool” of instructors to expand our Cornish In the Schools program.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop Curriculum : Create a structured and dynamic course covering the fundamentals of comics, including character design, storyboarding, panel composition, inking, and lettering for either K-2 nd, 3rd-5th grades or both.
  • Teach Weekly Classes : Lead interactive and hands-on sessions that cater to all experience levels, emphasizing creativity and technical growth.
  • Foster Student Growth : Provide constructive feedback on student work, helping them refine their visual storytelling and artistic skills.
  • Promote Collaboration : Encourage peer critiques and group projects to build a sense of community among students.
  • Integrate Technology : If applicable, use digital tools, such as drawing tablets or comic-creation software, when appropriate to complement traditional techniques.
  • Manage Supplies : Coordinate with the program administration to ensure students have access to necessary materials and resources.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Illustration, Animation, Fine Arts, or a related field.
  • At least 2 years of experience creating comics professionally (freelance or studio) and / or teaching visual arts.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in both traditional and digital comic-making techniques.
  • Proven understanding of storytelling, pacing, and visual communication.
  • Demonstrable familiarity with tools like Adobe Creative Suite, Procreate, or similar programs (preferred).
  • Demonstrable and effective communication and classroom management skills.
  • Verifiable commitment and passion for teaching and mentoring emerging artists.
  • Job Type : Part-Time schedule : hours ranging from 2 : 30 pm to 5 : 30 pm during the week.

    Compensation : $1,050 to $3,150, depending on the number of sectionals; calculated at $105.00 / hour.

    Location : Must be available for in-person sessions at the college’s Seattle-area campus or partnering community spaces.
