CPI is looking for a hands-on individual with an affinity for problem solving to join our team as a Consultant / Coatings Inspector. Our ideal candidate will be a resident of the Chicago, IL area and will be expected to successfully support projects focused on asset integrity in the Water and Wastewater Infrastructure Industry.
Typical Job Tasks
The primary role of this position requires:
- Serving key clients for coating inspection and consulting work in the Chicago area and throughout the country.
- Performing condition assessments of equipment, piping, tanks, vessels, and structures from a corrosion and protective coatings/linings perspective.
- Providing coatings expertise for applications for concrete (primarily) and steel substrates.
- Conducting failure analyses of coatings and linings, including field examination, sampling, and testing.
- Juggling multiple projects for various clients, including managing client expectations and scheduling for several projects.
- Performing field quality assurance coatings inspections and testing, including auditing contractor quality control processes to assure specifications and requirements are being enforced.
- Contributing to the preparation of proposals, including scope, schedule, and cost for existing and potential clients.
- Technical report writing to accurately document findings; preparing detailed technical reports with the assistance of more experienced technical staff when required.
- A desire for growth in technical knowledge, including continuing down the AMPP CIP path, as well as pursuing other corrosion protection certifications and diversifying knowledge—i.e., cathodic protection testing.
- Ability and willingness to travel to local and non-local industrial facilities.*
- Physical Requirements: Ability to complete a variety of physical field tasks including, but not limited to, the following—climbing ladders, scaffolding, working from heights and in confined spaces, carrying 50 pounds on occasion (i.e., moving tools around job site), and using power tools to collect field samples (power drill, core drill).

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
Required
- Protective coatings/lining knowledge and related certificates including NACE, SSPC, AMPP Coatings Inspector Program (CIP) Senior Coatings Inspector (Level 3) is preferred. A level 2 with adequate experience and an intent to pursue level 3 will also be considered.**
- A hands-on, detail-oriented individual who excels in technical expertise while maintaining a practical approach to construction execution.
- Strong ability to communicate with clients, provide exceptional service, and build lasting relationships.
- Knowledge of corrosion and its impacts on tanks, pipes, and other equipment, or a strong willingness to learn.

Desired
- Knowledge and experience in the Water/Wastewater industry.
- Experience with coatings/linings systems for a concrete substrate.
- Knowledge and understanding of metallurgy and/or welding.
- Construction/industrial site safety knowledge.
- Knowledge in other related core discipline areas, i.e., reinforced concrete, cathodic protection, or welding. Related certificates (NACE, SSPC, ANST, ICRI) are a plus.
- Engineering background (EIT, PE) including civil, structural, and materials/metallurgical.
NOTES & Other Important Information:
- *TRAVEL: Travel is typically for short-duration assignments in industrial facilities on a low-to-moderate basis; estimated ~25% of the time, with occasional peaks (a few weeks in a row); local travel to job sites (~2 hours) to conduct inspections is common.
- **CPI will support a path to AMPP Senior Coating Inspector (Level 3) for the right candidate.
- Must be a current resident of North America for employment consideration.
- Final candidates must be willing to submit all relevant certifications and licenses for verification.
