Cortland Repertory Theatre (CRT), a nonprofit, professional live theatrical company with locations in the City of Cortland and Preble, NY, is seeking a House Manager to join our seasonal team for the summer performance season.
Position Overview
The House Manager is a key liaison between CRT and our patrons, playing a vital role in the patron experience. This position supervises front-of-house operations during performances, schedules and trains volunteers, resolves seating or customer service concerns, and ensures the theatre remains a welcoming and orderly space. We are looking for a responsible, friendly, and composed individual who thrives in a fast-paced environment and who represents CRT with hospitality and professionalism.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide exceptional customer service and address patron needs, questions, complaints, or concerns efficiently and professionally.
- Schedule and manage volunteer ushers and ticket scanners to ensure adequate coverages for all performances.
- Collaborate respectfully and enthusiastically with CRT staff, Guild members and other volunteers.
- Troubleshoot seating issues and other front-of-house concerns during performances.
- Maintain cleanliness of the theatre and surrounding areas before, during, and after shows.
- Ensure safety, organization, and a positive atmosphere in the box office and front-of-house space.
- Follow written and verbal instructions accurately.
- Manage potentially stressful situations calmly and maturely in a live performance setting.
- Work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, and double-performance days.
- Travel between CRT’s venues in Cortland and the Little York Pavilion in Preble as needed.
Qualifications
- Previous experience in customer service or guest services preferred, but not required.
- Excellent communication skills (verbal and written).
- Strong computer skills to act as back-up assistance to Box Office staff.
- Ability to multitask and manage shifts effectively.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Familiarity with hospitality or theatre operations a plus.
- Must have a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
Job Details
- Summer/Seasonal in-person position: May 26 – August 15, and Wednesdays in Sept. (optional)
- Hours: 25–35 hours per week, depending on the performance schedule
- Schedule Includes:
o 4-hour shifts on single performance days
o 8-hour shifts on double performance days
o Day shifts for matinees, evening shifts, and weekend availability as needed
Work Location: Primarily at the Little York Pavilion in Dwyer Memorial Park, 6799 Little York Lake Road, Preble, NY
Compensation:
$15.50 per hour. Hours vary by schedule and performance needs (daytime, evenings, weekends).
