Education, Certifications and Work-Related Experience
- Teaching certification in Special Education
- Current Tennessee Teaching Certificate
- Special Ed. Comprehensive Endorsement Code 461
- Elementary/Middle School Teaching experience preferred
- Preferred- Successful teaching experience in self-special education classroom or other relevant teaching experience
- The ideal candidate will have successful classroom experience with strong abilities in a collaborative team atmosphere.
- Willingness to receive physical intervention and verbal de-escalation training and serve on the school’s crisis management team as needed
Job Description- Provide instructional, academic, adaptive, and/or prevocational support via direct instruction, co-teaching, and/or resource support to students with disabilities in an elementary school. Collaborate with colleagues to provide accommodations, modifications, and interventions within the general education curriculum. Manage a caseload of students with a full range of disabilities including significant developmental and/or cognitive delays. Develop lesson plans and teach reading, math, social studies, and science.
Qualities of a Desired Candidate Include:
- Manage a caseload of students with a full range of disabilities.
- Thorough knowledge of the principles and methodology of effective teaching of students with a variety of moderate and comprehensive disabilities.
- Provide high-quality special education services to support students in meeting their IEP goals.
- Serve as a team member in determining and implementing student accommodations, referral, eligibility, placement, and individual education program development.
- Coordinate with general education teachers to ensure students have equal access to inclusion opportunities.
- Ability to develop a classroom schedule and individual student schedules effectively utilize teaching assistants to meet the IEP services and needs of every student.
- Comply with district, local, state, and federal policies/procedures/regulations regarding special education records, reports, and services
- Maintain frequent and substantive communication with parents, teachers, related services personnel, and supervisors. This includes making provisions to be available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside of the instructional day when required or requested to do so under reasonable terms.
- Assess students’ needs and develop a compliant and high-quality individualized education program (IEP) for students with disabilities.
- Assess students for AAC needs in coordination with the school’s SLP and/or OT and effectively utilize AAC with students. Dedication to ensuring that every child has an effective means of communication.
- Assess the accomplishments of students through effective data collection and provide progress reports as required.
- Maintain a positive working relationship with team members to develop, coordinate, implement, and evaluate school curriculum and assessments.
- Create and maintain a classroom climate that is conducive to the learning process. This includes establishing a strong positive behavioral support system within the classroom and for each child as needed.
- Conduct compliant and effective Functional Behavior Assessments and Behavior Intervention Plans in coordination with other district and school staff.
- Initiate and maintain positive relationships with parents through effective communication.
- Supervise and train multiple educational assistants supporting students within the classroom.
- Dedication to equal access and personal growth for all students.
- Commitment to continuing education and lifelong learning. This includes attendance at all required JSE and MCS professional development as well as self-directed professional development.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Principal or Special Education Director.
