Overview

The David Rockefeller Studies Program at the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) is seeking to hire a fellow or senior fellow for climate change, with the title depending on the successful candidate’s level of experience. The fellow will contribute to CFR’s Climate Realism Initiative. The fellow will be expected to conduct original research and writing on topics that may include the geopolitical, geoeconomic, or security implications of climate change and the transition to low-carbon energy as well as climate-oriented trade, technology, and industrial policy, with the goal of informing debates and making recommendations for U.S. foreign policy. This is an extraordinary opportunity for an individual looking to shape the conversation to prepare the United States for the grave threats posed by global climate change, navigate the opportunities and risks of the energy transition for U.S. interests, and develop pragmatic and realistic strategies to avert the worst potential impacts of climate change.

The major responsibilities of this position will include (but are not limited to):

  • Producing original research on energy and climate issues.
  • Organizing and leading roundtables, study groups, and workshops at CFR on energy and climate change, its economic, political, and social consequences, and possible responses.
  • Collaborating with other CFR Fellows and staff on institutional initiatives.
  • Working with CFR’s distinguished membership, including those with deep experience in climate and energy.
  • Briefing administration officials, members of Congress, and others on research findings and recommendations.
  • Educating a broader public audience through media interviews and public speaking.
  • Developing fundraising proposals for the program in collaboration with senior staff.

Qualifications

Education

  • PhD in a relevant field, or equivalent experience in government, journalism, or business.

Experience

  • Demonstrated expertise on energy and climate-change issues.
  • Applicants must possess a strong record of professional achievement.
  • An established publication record on energy and climate-change issues. 

Related Skills & Other Requirements

  • Strong research, writing, and speaking skills.
  • Experience mentoring junior staff preferred.

Compensation and Benefits

The full-time annual compensation range for this position is $125,000 – $225,000 depending on experience.
