Role Summary:
The Sow Farrowing Lead is a key position responsible for leading and training the farrowing team. This role reports to the Sow Barn Manager and involves overseeing the operations of the farrowing barn, including employee management, animal care and handling from birth to weaning, as well as attention to detail and efficiency in farrowing techniques.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Monitoring and maintenance of the barn environment, including ventilation systems, electronic feed systems, and watering systems.
- Overseeing the health of the animals, including monitoring sows during farrowing, providing care and treatment to both sows and piglets, and ensuring proper weaning placement and fall behind management.
- Administering treatments and vaccinations to sows and piglets as necessary.
- Evaluating the quality of weaned piglets.
- Managing Day 1 Care procedures.
- Ensuring the initial setup and inspections of the farrowing room, creating management plans, and performing pit maintenance.
- Maintaining a clean and safe working environment.
- Utilizing Continuous Improvement tools to optimize processes.
- Overseeing the performance of the farrowing team, including training, daily task assignments, and time management.
- Managing documentation requirements for the farrowing barn, including wean paperwork, farrowing records, and Pig Knows reporting.
- Holding team members accountable for their duties, company policies, and key expectations.
- Ensuring that animal handling and welfare policies are effectively implemented and adhered to.
Qualifications
- Prior experience in livestock management, preferably swine, but also considering other livestock backgrounds such as dairy or poultry.
- An Associate's degree (A.A.) or equivalent from a two-year college, or a degree from an accredited technical school, or a minimum of five years of related experience and/or training.
- The ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment and stand for long periods, with the physical capacity to lift 50 pounds.
- Excellent multitasking skills and a strong teamwork orientation.
- Good verbal and written communication skills.
- The ability to work in a barn environment with exposure to animal dander, manure, dust, blood, odors, and frequent noise.
- A commitment to working a standard Monday-to-Friday schedule, with occasional weekends and holidays required.
- A dedication to meeting and exceeding industry standards for animal care and welfare.
