POSITION SUMMARY: This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Child Watch Assistant is responsible for the safety and wellbeing of member and staff children in the Childwatch facility. The Assistant follows all childcare policies and procedures through age appropriate activities and interaction with the YMCA participants.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Establishes and maintains a safe and healthy environment in the Child Watch area.
- Knows and follows the Child Watch Policies and Procedures.
- Monitors the Sign-in and Sign-out sheet.
- Posts necessary information to ensure the safety and well-being of the children.
- Maintains an orderly play environment.
- Maintains the cleanliness of the room and uses disinfectant sprays/wipes accordingly.
- Supports social and emotional development and provides positive guidance.
- Implements hands-on play to develop positive self-esteem and social skills.
- Uses and promotes positive guidance techniques.
- Communicates with children at the development level.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
EDUCATION AND YEARS OF EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
Minimum 15 years of age, prior experience working with children is preferred. Must have a positive and professional attitude and willingness to commit to the mission of the YMCA. Applicants over the age of 18 must pass a criminal background check.
REQUIRED SKILLS/RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Excellent communication skills with members and co-workers.
- Ability to be patient and understanding when working with children and interacting with parents, establishing trust with both parties.
- Ability to complete all cleaning responsibilities.
- Certification in CPR and First Aid is preferred.
- Must act professionally in all situations.
- Must complete required training and professional development activities.
- Attend staff meetings.
- Keep the room orderly by ensuring things are put away in the correct places; respect the toys/equipment and notify supervisor of damaged or broken items.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Prolonged periods of standing and frequent bending.
- Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds at a time.
- Will be exposed to illness-causing bacteria and viruses.
