General Definition of Work
Performs difficult skilled trades work in facility maintenance and repair activities, performing painting, plumbing, and mechanical maintenance and repair tasks, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the limited supervision. Continuous supervision is exercised over the Maintenance Technicians, Community Service worker and / or work detail inmates.

Essential Functions
Oversees and participates in a variety of skilled trades work in the maintenance and repair of buildings; completes and maintains records associated with assigned work orders.
Oversees and participates in carpentry, electrical, plumbing, and mechanical repairs; repairs and maintains electrical systems and components; repairs roof leaks and ceilings.
Oversees and participates in in maintenance of the County's heating and cooling equipment; performs preventative maintenance and repairs on equipment.
Oversees and participates in installs, repairs, and replaces electrical systems including wiring, conduit, switches, receptacles, lighting fixtures, grounds, controls, and relays.
Oversees and participates in the maintenance and repair of motorized equipment; performs small engine repairs and maintenance.
Oversees and participates in preparing surfaces for painting; paints walls, ceilings, doors, windows, cabinets, and equipment; paints interior and exterior building fixtures.
Oversees and participates in repairs, installs of cabinets and shelving systems; operates wood working tools to cut, form, and finish necessary materials.
Oversees and participates in renovations of office spaces and assists with office moves; moves office furniture and equipment as necessary.
Plans, designs and supervises the work of those engaged in carpentry and cabinet work for all types of furniture and equipment.
Assigns projects to Maintenance Technicians, assigned community service workers and / or work detail inmates; inspects work in progress and upon completion to ensure that it meets required standards; inspects items reported to be in need of repair.
Performs estimates of time, materials, and costs for work for assigned projects.
Oversees the operation and maintenance of equipment, machines and hand-held power tools; enforces safety regulations and provides safety training to create a safe working environment.
Transports assigned community service workers, prioritizes work orders and ensures assigned work is completed properly.
Prepares and maintains records and reports.
Works a variable schedule (i.e. after normal hours, weekends, special events).
Encourages and promotes a culture of excellent service.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Thorough knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and equipment used in building maintenance and repair; thorough knowledge of chemical agents and finishing solvents used in maintenance roles; thorough knowledge of hazards and safety precautions associated with type of work assigned; thorough knowledge of applicable codes, pertinent inspection and safety requirements; skill in the use of hand and power tools of the trade; ability to recognize and diagnose problems; ability to follow oral and written instructions; ability to make arithmetic computations using whole numbers, fractions and decimals; ability to compute rates, ratios and percentages; ability to plan and supervise the work of others; ability to work from sketches, blueprints and drawings; ability to maintain records; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with vendors, contractors, associates and the general public.
Education and Experience
High school diploma or GED with coursework in carpentry, electrical, HVAC and plumbing trades, or related field and considerable experience in building maintenance, repair, or construction activities, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Physical Requirements
This work requires the regular exertion of up to 10 pounds of force and frequent exertion of up to 25 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 50 pounds of force; work regularly requires speaking or hearing and using hands to finger, handle or feel, frequently requires standing, walking, reaching with hands and arms and repetitive motions and occasionally requires sitting, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, tasting or smelling, pushing or pulling and lifting; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and / or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and / or small parts, using of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts within arm's length, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work frequently requires working near moving mechanical parts and occasionally requires working in high, precarious places, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to the risk of electrical shock, exposure to vibration, wearing a self-contained breathing apparatus and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic).
Special Requirements
Favorable background history as determined by review of local, State and Federal records.
Valid driver's license in the State of Georgia with a favorable driving history (MVR).
Obtain Georgia Basic Jail Officer Certification within six months if placement at Sheriff's Office.
