What are the responsibilities and job description for the Public Health Nurse II - School position at County of Dare?
Performs intermediate skilled technical work within Dare County school system providing treatment and preventive care to patients, providing educational information to patients and the community, responding to emergency situations in the clinical area, developing/revising guidelines, policies, and procedures, preparing and maintaining files and records, and preparing reports, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Public Health Nurse II School Lead and the Public Health Nurse Supervisor.
- Provides direct nursing care to school aged children; obtains patient health history; reviews and assesses vital signs and symptoms; conducts routine tests; administers vaccines.
- Develops and implements individualized care plans with timely documentation of services rendered; dispenses medications as ordered.
- Analyzes patients’ progress and modifies plans of care as needed during contact on a regular basis.
- Provides patient education, counseling, immunizations and health promotion services.
- Coordinates care between the patient, physicians, DSS, and other community resources as needed to secure services for the patient.
- Performs assessment and crisis intervention for assigned case load.
- Conducts flu clinics.
- Trains new nursing staff.
- Performs other assigned duties.
- Thorough knowledge of the principles, standards, practices, and techniques of professional and public health nursing.
- Thorough knowledge of the dangers inherent in and the precautions to be taken in the use of drugs and other medication.
- Thorough knowledge of treatment, assessment, immunization, and related medical services for the type of medically ill patients in area of assignment.
- Thorough knowledge of local and State rules, regulations, procedures, and policies pertaining to nursing services.
- Ability to exercise judgment in appraising situations and making decisions.
- Ability to accurately maintain patient medical records and prepare reports.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, physicians, and associates.
- Associate’s degree in nursing from an accredited nursing program.
- Introduction to Public Health course within one year of hire.
- Moderate experience in a related field or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
- Possession of an unencumbered NC Registered Nurse license upon hire.
- Valid driver’s license.
