Bi-weekly Salary:Engineering Technician I: $ 1,714.49– $ 1,878.51Engineering Technician II: $1,878.51 - $ 2,059.38Engineering Technician III: $ 2,059.38 - $ 2,258.76The Del Norte County Community Development Department is seeking a qualified candidate to fill one vacancy for the position of Engineering Technician . This position is classified as full time.

To perform routine technical and paraprofessional field engineering work, construction inspection and drafting.

To perform complex paraprofessional and technical field engineering work including construction inspection and drafting; to act as lead person for other field engineering staff.

To perform complex paraprofessional and technical field engineering work including construction inspection and drafting; to act as lead person for other field engineering staff. Employees in this classification perform duties under minimal supervision except as new and unusual circumstances apply.

Detailed Work Activities

Essential job duties may include any of the following tasks, knowledge, skills and other characteristics. The list that follows is not intended as a comprehensive list; it is intended to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed, and may be required to perform additional, position-specific tasks.

  • Performs routine technical and paraprofessional field engineering work, construction inspection and drafting.
  • Performs survey crew duties, including the operation of standard survey equipment.
  • Inspects field construction projects to ensure that contract work meets County requirements.
  • Performs State required construction material tests such as sand equivalent and grading analysts.
  • Assists in preparation of construction plans, cross sections, profiles, and airport layouts.
  • Reproduces prints and sepias of aerial, topography survey and other engineering maps.
  • Performs traffic counts and sight distance inspection of traffic problems.
  • Inspects survey maps for compliance with Subdivision Map Act and Land Surveyor’s Act, and mathematical accuracy.
  • Performs related duties as required.
  • Acts as survey party chief for construction and property surveys.
  • Determines appropriate survey methods to be utilized for various types of surveys.
  • Performs surveys including “P” line, cross sections, levels, slope staking, and culvert staking property.
  • Operates survey equipment including set up, adjustment and other general functions.
  • Researches maps and record deeds to determine survey placement of property corners and rights of way.
  • Trains other personnel in the proper and skillful use of survey equipment.
  • Inspects construction contractors for compliance with project plans & specification, including compliance with various State and Federal regulations.
  • Maintains daily log of contract work progress including equipment used in work and record of personnel.
  • Performs complex field and lab tests on sample construction materials.
  • Informs contractor of non-acceptability of materials or workmanship based on quality control tests.
  • Monitors safety standards and shuts down operations if immediate danger exists.
  • Reviews field notes and drafts for preliminary designs for Public Works Facilities.
  • Prepares field notes and drafts for preliminary designs for Public Works Facilities.
  • Performs related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications

Any combination of education, training and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and abilities would be:

Level I:

: Completion of an accredited two (2) year college curriculum in civil engineering or a related technical field.

: One (1) year of experience in technical engineering work, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

This work consists of technical and paraprofessional duties at an entry-level of classification within a series.

Level II:

: Completion of an accredited two (2) year college curriculum in civil engineering or a related technical field.

: Two (2) years of experience in technical engineering work. An equivalent combination of education and experience is acceptable.

This work consists of paraprofessional and technical duties at the lead person level.

Level III:

: Completion of an accredited two-year college curriculum in civil engineering or a related technical field.

: Four (4) years of experience in technical engineering work. An equivalent combination of education and experience is acceptable.

This work consists of paraprofessional and technical duties at the lead person level.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Level I:

Knowledge of:

  • Principles of algebra, geometry, and trigonometry.
  • Surveying and drafting procedures and equipment.
  • Methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in construction engineering.
  • Materials sampling and testing procedures.

Ability To:

  • Operate precision surveying instruments.
  • Learn to perform drafting work and to assist in the preparation of engineering designs.
  • Gather data and prepare accurate reports.
  • Follow oral and written directions.
  • Obtain material samples and perform routine tests.
  • Make mathematical calculations quickly and accurately.

Level II:

Knowledge Of:

  • Principles of algebra, geometry, and trigonometry.
  • Surveying and drafting procedures, record keeping, and equipment.
  • Methods, materials, tools, equipment, and supervision of construction engineering.
  • Uses, physical characteristics, sampling, and testing of construction materials.

Ability To:

  • Prepare accurate and complete notes, sketches, plans, and reports on construction work.
  • Follow complex oral and written instructions of a technical nature.

  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow workers, private contractors, and/or the general public.

Selection Process:

Condition of Employment:
