The Autopsy Technician prepares for autopsies and the dissection of bodies, including evisceration and removal of the brain, separation of organ blocks and special dissection techniques, sterilizing/disinfecting instruments, setting up equipment and supplies, and preparing specimens, as directed.Under the general supervision of the Chief of Forensic Investigations:
· Weigh and measure human remains
· Photograph organs and prepare toxicology samples, blood, urine, and vitreous fluids
· Draw biological fluid samples
· Maintain confidentiality of information on all cases; abides by HIPAA Rules
· Maintain the safety and cleanliness of the morgue and its associated equipment
· Assist forensic pathologists with autopsies, weight descendants, weighing organs, sewing up bodies, proper packaging, and labeling of evidence to preserve the chain of custody evidence
· Contacting funeral homes regarding the release and picking up of decedents
· Performs other job-related duties as assigned
  • Minimum of an associate degree, EMT or nursing degree, may be able to substitute experience for a degree. 
  • Bachelor’s Degree Preferred.
  • 2 years of experience in a medical field such as nursing, surgical technology or experience working with autopsy procedures and practices, including evisceration
  • Knowledge of anatomy and medical terminology required
  • Ability to handle foul odors
  • Must be able to work any shift as necessary in a 24-hour period, including weekends and holidays
  • Strong writing and oral communication skills
