General Statement of Duties
Assigned to work areas in Elmore County which he/she performs mosquito surveillance and trapping activities as part of an integrated mosquito management program; using mosquito trapping systems provided by Elmore County Mosquito Abatement District, under the supervision of the Pest Control Supervisor.
Classification Summary
A person in this position is responsible for taking all necessary and proper steps for the control of trapping and speciating of mosquitoes for public health and welfare importance in the district. This job will be approximately 20 hours per week for approximately 4 months, depending on environmental conditions.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Independently prepares, deploys, and collects mosquito traps; independently analyzes and interprets data to determine follow-up surveillance measures. Delivering all trapped mosquitos to the Mosquito Abatement Office where specimens are typed by species and counted.
- Be punctual and provide services in a timely manner within a specified timeframe.
- Keep an accurate record of trapping sites visited; using forms provided by the District.
- Though trapping sites are pre-determined by the Pest Control Supervisor, updated field maps as needed. Maintains maps, and records of each site of trap placement.
- Follow all safety equipment procedures with care.
- Represent the county by following all driving rules and regulations and interacting with the public in a positive, professional manner. Communicate respectfully, honestly, and knowledgeably to residents if stopped and questioned.
- Can adapt to the irregular hours inherently involved in public mosquito control. Work hours will be flexible evening and morning hours using department vehicles.
- Safely and accurately use any necessary laboratory equipment, including but not limited to microscopes, forceps, magnifying devices, lamps, RAMP testing machines, vortex agitators, centrifuges, pipettors, and vials.
- Monitors and reviews records for accuracy, completeness, and efficacy of collection. Prepares specimens for safe shipping to lab within the timeframe allotted.
- Will not share information related to the surveys without advice from Pest Control Supervisor.
- Be safety-minded with the ability to keep detailed records and evaluate situations while accurately adopting an effective course of action.
- Perform other job duties as assigned by the Pest Control Supervisor.
- Monitors and manages enforcement of mosquito abatement program statutes.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of:
- Emergency response techniques.
- Insect/pest taxonomy or identification.
- Streets and unmarked roads in urban and rural Elmore County.
Ability to:
- Identify by physical inspection, most mosquito trap sites within the district.
- Execute a mosquito abatement program.
- Interpret and apply county, state and federal policies and procedures.
- Complete assigned projects within established deadline.
- Communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
- Follow written and oral instructions.
- Establish good rapport with department employees, the general public and personnel from other government agencies.
- Operate standard office equipment, a personal computer using program applications appropriate to assigned duties.
- Maintain records, logs and documentation.
- Safely operate, adjust and monitor traps.
- React to change promptly and effectively and handle other essential tasks as assigned.
License/Certification Requirements:
- Must possess and maintain a valid Idaho driver’s license and a good driving record.
Acceptable Experience and Training
- High school diploma or equivalent general educational development (GED) certification.
- Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge and abilities necessary to perform the work.
- Communicate effectively in English in both written and verbal forms.
