Assists the Band Director in supervising and instructing musicians in the Hawai`i County band or directing the West Hawai`i band; plays a musical instrument and/or its related double in the Hawai`i County or West Hawai`i band at public performances; and assists in the administrative responsibilities for the bands; and performs other related duties as assigned.

There is one (1) immediate permanent part-time vacancy with the Department of Parks and Recreation - West Hawai'i County Band in Kona.

The eligible list may be used for other permanent and temporary vacancies as they arise during the life of the list.  Temporary appointment may lead to conversion to permanent appointment.

Special Working Conditions:
  • Works irregular hours:  Must be able to work Tuesday evenings for rehearsals, weekends and holidays for performances; average of 18 hours per month.
  • Must be physically able to march in parades, including inclement weather.

  • Plans and coordinates monthly schedules of rehearsals and performances for the band in collaboration with the Band Director.
  • Conducts and/or participates in full band rehearsals, sectionals, or small group rehearsals; supervises the positions and activities of a section.
  • Conducts or leads the woodwind or brass and percussion sections in rehearsals as section leader; supervises and instructs musicians in the section; makes suggestions as to technique and explains musical interpretations.
  • Supervises and leads the band in parades as drum major; conducts all marching rehearsals; recommends musical selections for use in parades.
  • Plays first chair level, including regularly playing solo passages and performing as featured soloist.
  • Participates in concerts, parades, and other regular and special engagements of the band; warms up, warms down, tunes up, sets up, and breaks down all equipment; studies musical scores and memorizes parts.
  • Participates in Band Advisory Committee; identifies musical problems and resolves them; reviews and resolves section concerns including the assignment of parts and performance techniques.
  • Assists in all personnel and fiscal matters, including staffing, inventory, and equipment needs; reviews and approves expenditures; maintains records and prepares reports.
  • Participates in the interview, auditioning, selection, and promotion process; moderates interview process; recommends candidates for open positions. 
  • Assigns, trains, and evaluates employees; reviews the employees' performance and prepares job performance reports; conducts investigations and makes recommendations regarding personnel actions, including disciplinary actions.
  • Prepares and reviews all timesheets and attachments for accuracy and conformance with contracts, rules, and procedures.
  • Transports band instruments and equipment to and from performances; sets up and cleans up at performances; cares for and maintains instruments and equipment.
  • Assists in the maintenance of the band's music library and property control system; participates in indexing, cataloging, and filing band music and other matters; replace and mends torn and worn music sheets.
  • In the absence of the Band Director, may assume responsibility of the band.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Training and Experience: 
A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to:

  • graduation from high school, and
  • applicants shall have experience playing in a concert band or orchestra or in a musical group over a six year period, in which
  • three (3) years shall have included experience as a conductor or an assistant conductor, and
  • possession of a valid State of Hawai`i driver license (Class 3) or any other valid comparable driver license, provided, this license requirement may be waived for qualified individuals with disabilities who are able to perform the essential duties of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.  

Examination:  All applicants who meet the minimum qualification requirements will be assigned a score of 70 points.  An education and experience evaluation will be conducted based on the applicant's training, education and experience as presented in the application.

Knowledge of:  The musical instrument(s) to which assigned, including literature, history, and performance techniques; the fundaments of music and playing in a concert band/orchestra; the fundamentals of harmony and melody; principles and practices of supervision; pertinent rules, policies, and procedures relating to the administrative functions of the band.


Ability to:  play the assigned musical instrument(s) in the band at the level six proficiency with the expected degree of skill, technique, and interpretation, and the appropriate tone, rhythm, and intonation; read music proficiently and memorize parts; plan, assign, supervise, and evaluate the performance of others; supervise, lead, and instruct the work of other musicians; adapt and adjust individual performance to suit the needs of the group; prepare complete and concise reports; operate County van and transport instruments and equipment to and from performances; carry instrument and march in parades; establish effective working relationships with other musicians.


Special Working Conditions:  Work irregular hours, and on weekends and holidays.
