What are the responsibilities and job description for the LPN - Lycoming County Prison position at County of Lycoming?
The LPN provides nursing skills in the unique environment of a correctional facility medical department. The Nurse is responsible for providing medical care to inmates with a wide variety of medical conditions; works under minimal supervision with a high level of competence; complies with prison policies and at all times maintains an awareness and compliance with prison security measures.
A prison physician provides direction on medical issues and the RN supervisor supervises the LPN.
Specific Duties:
- Conducts initial medical assessments and administers a PPD on new commitments
- Conducts sick call on inmates with medical requests, implements any care needed
- Schedules inmates to be seen by prison physician and assists physician in clinics
- Draws blood for lab studies as ordered by prison physician/psychiatrist
- Prepares and passes medication
- Maintains charts and related records
- Responds to medical emergencies in the prison
- Corresponds with other prisons and healthcare facilities to request information for the continuation of care for specified inmates
- Attends meetings and trainings as directed
- Performs other duties as assigned by Nurse Supervisor
Job Requirements:
- Licensed as a practical nurse in PA
- 2 years experience in a corrections or emergency setting preferred
- Ability to perform duties autonomously without direct supervision
- Ability to follow Prison/County policies and exercise sound professional judgment
- Ability to prepare written reports that are clear and concise
- Submit to/pass a pre-employment drug screen and background check
Working Conditions:
Light/hazardous. LPN has regular exposure to hazardous or unpredictable conditions related to working in close contact with inmates who may be severely mentally ill or violent.
Schedule:
Second shift 2pm-10am with 80 hours bi-weekly, working every other weekend.

- Basic life support certification

- HIPAA knowledge
- Ability to work in a corrections facility medical clinic
- Strong patient assessment skills
- Tube feeding experience
