YOUTH MENTOR
DEPARTMENT: Human Services
JOB STATUS: Full-time
SUPERVISOR: Children &Family Services Manager
PAY CLASSIFICATION: I
SUMMARY:
Under the supervision and direction of the Children & Family Services Manager, the mentor helps youth gain skills and confidence in areas such as self-esteem, family and school values, and employability skill-building opportunities during spontaneous and real-life situations. The mentor supports the youth by practicing, modeling, guiding and shadowing them in the community.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The following duties are illustrative and the person holding this position may be required to perform other duties as assigned.
1. Engages youth through pro-social and skill-building activities designed to enhance positive development and self-esteem; counsels youth.
2. Assists in the development of goals for youth served and works as team member with other systems involved.
3. Facilitate youth development programming in alignment with approved curriculum materials and organizational goals.
4. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while demonstrating strong time management and organizational skills.
5. Flexibility to adapt to changing schedules, youth needs, and program requirements, including occasional evenings and early mornings.
6. Completes necessary documentation for client case files and for program reporting purposes. Moderate computer skills, including the ability to use a personal or laptop computer for preparation of written reports and correspondence, as well as data entry and use of specialized software.
7. Mandated to make reports of child abuse and/or neglect concerns to appropriate authorities.
8. Adhere to confidentiality standards.
9. Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
Ø Bachelor’s degree in human services related field required.
Ø Two years previous experience working with children and families required.
Ø Requires a valid Wisconsin driver’s license and access to insured transportation.
Ø Applicants must pass background checks.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Ø Ability to develop rapport with parents and youth from wide range of backgrounds, family histories and individual cultures.
Ø Creative, innovative and progressive to engage and educate families. This includes being responsible, independent, and flexible when working with parents and youths.
Ø Ability to learn the functions, procedures, organization, regulations governing the operations of the program involved.
Ø Ability to use computer systems for word processing, spreadsheets, system networks, etc.
Ø Ability to exercise judgment and discretion in the application and interpretation of department policies and regulations.
Ø Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with youth, parents/caregivers, the public and with team members.
Ø Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
Ø Ability to maintain flexible schedule, including evening and weekend hours, to meet needs of families and youth in program.
