The Martin County Sheriff’s Office is accepting applications for a part-time seasonal Water Patrol Deputy. This position will be hired on a temporary basis for Summer 2025 - Memorial Day through Labor Day, scheduled Friday through Sunday - approximately 20 hours per week. Shift and hours may vary based on the needs of the department. Summer 2025 wage is $20.00 per hour.
The Water Patrol Deputy Sheriff maintains law and order within the Martin County area lakes, patrols assigned area to enforce laws, investigate crimes. The incumbent may be an unlicensed Deputy that assists with investigations and patrols through assigned areas and observes boating violations and conducts public instruction and enforcement on Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) matters for boaters and general public.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Responds to and to listen, comprehend, and effectively communicate information both written and orally to all individuals.
- Assists other law enforcement agencies and officials in carrying out their duties.
- Assists outside agencies (ambulance/fire department) in the protection of life and property.
- Assists or enforces driving laws, rules and regulations.
- Responds to and effectively handles situations firmly, tactfully, and courteously with respect for the rights of others.
- Responds to and analyzes situations quickly and objectively.
- Enforcement or assist with enforcement of ordinances and laws.
- Identify suspects and objects, detect danger, and read license plates, etc.
- Conducts investigations, analyzes findings, and prepares reports.
- Testifies in administrative and judicial hearings as required.
- Responds to and effectively obtains cooperation of victims, witnesses, suspects, informants, their relatives, and private and public agencies.
- Performs critical observations while under stressful circumstances.
- Enforces/Assists in Knowledge of water patrol principles, and practices, watercraft and criminal ordinances and laws and rules of watercraft safety and navigation.
- Safely Operates, maneuvers, and/or steer equipment and machinery requiring simple but continuous adjustments, such as motorboat, water search and rescue equipment, motor vehicles, emergency communications equipment, oxygen tanks, mechanic’s hand tools, and telephone.
- Functional and effective knowledge of the geography of Martin County.
- The work entails the need to drag or carry objects 120 pounds ten (10) yards or thirty (30) feet from time to time.
- Conducts public instruction and enforcement on Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) matters for boaters and general public.
- Perform other work-related duties as required.

MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Some college with coursework focused in criminal justice, police administration and law enforcement.
- Licensed by the Minnesota Board of Peace Officers Standards and Training, or eligible for licensure upon appointment preferred.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license.
A successful applicant is subject to completion of reference verification and criminal background checks deemed satisfactory by the County.
