Job Description
The County Casework Supervisor – GPS Intake Unit position is an advanced supervisory social service position currently responsible for planning, oversight, direction, and evaluation of the work of assigned GPS Intake staff. An important aspect of this work is the use of social work knowledge and experience for the ongoing systemic evaluation of problems referred to the agency and a preliminary assessment of risk and intervention response times. Considerable initiative and independent professional judgment is expected in trending the needs of children and families and recommending development/expansion of community supports and resources.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
This position reports directly to the GPS Intake Program Director.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
This position is responsible for supervision over four (4) to six (6) caseworkers in the General Protective Services (GPS) Intake Unit.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES OF THE POSITION
Directs, plans and coordinates the activities of caseworkers in GPS Intake Unit via individual supervisory conferences, unit meetings and review of case records, so as to ensure consistent decision making, provision of services and compliance with State and Federal laws and regulations, agency policies and procedures and court orders.
Ensures casework staff provide required information and paperwork on a timely basis to agency support units (fiscal, clerical Health Choices, data entry, etc.) to facilitate the preparation of required reports, enrollments and referrals. Approves leave requests of supervisees to ensure coverage of unit.
Completes performance evaluations on and maintains current job descriptions on all supervisees. Recommends/administers appropriate disciplinary action as warranted.
Reviews and assigns referrals accepted for GPS assessment designating preliminary level of risk and caseworker response time. Conducts 10-day supervisory review of all assigned cases to assure proper case planning and service provision.
Reviews and determines those referrals requiring continuing (post intake) agency involvement and recommends appropriate agency unit assignment. Assists with smooth transfer of case responsibility.
Ensures that assigned workloads are maintained at comparable levels and/or as appropriate to supervisee’s position classification.
Acts as “back up” to unit caseworkers and provides (or delegates) for appropriate services to their caseload assignments in their absence.
Participates in agency and inter-agency staffings, supervisors’ meetings, case reviews, court hearings, and other meetings and conferences related to the agency GPS intake services in order to make delivery of the agency’s services most effective.
Informs management about GPS Intake needs, staffing needs and situations that might have a high public profile. Resolves complaints from clients, community and staff regarding the operation of the unit. Assumes major responsibility for establishing and maintaining necessary working relationships with other units and offices to facilitate the delivery of Agency services.
Acts as agency representative/liaison with community groups and service providers as appropriate in order to promote agency goals and objectives and otherwise promote sound public relations with other agencies and the community in general. Educates/informs the public regarding agency mandates, policy and procedures.
Trains and orients new GPS Intake staff and provides ongoing staff training. Complete reviews with assigned casework staff that focus on quality assurance, staff accountability, and compliance with child welfare regulations to protect children and support families effectively. Participates in developing and implementing training programs for own supervisees as well as other agency staff; orients new Agency staff and student interns. Maintains own professional growth and development by attending seminars, conferences and through review of current professional literature.
Reviews on-going computer management reports in order to monitor service activity and case assignments; to identify system problems and participates in efforts to resolve identified problems.
Prepares and periodically revises policy and procedures related to assigned program area.
Performs related work as required.

REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE – Two years of professional experience in public or private social work and a bachelor's degree with major course work in sociology, social welfare, psychology, gerontology, criminal justice, or other related social sciences; OR
Any equivalent combination of experience and education, which includes 12 college credits in sociology, social welfare, psychology, gerontology, criminal justice, or other related social sciences.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of the basic principles of supervision.
Knowledge of current case management and social work principles, practices, and methodology.
Knowledge of individual and group behavior and methods used in working effectively with children, youth and families, people who are mentally disabled, people who are physically challenged, and others.
Knowledge of the basic principles and methods of program interpretation and community organization.
Knowledge of the rules, regulations, policies, and procedures that relate to the provision of social services.
Knowledge of current social, economic, and health problems and available resources.
Ability to plan, organize, and supervise the work of a professional and non-professional social service staff.
Ability to analyze, interpret, and evaluate case records and recommend sound courses of action.
Ability to orient and train subordinates on rules, regulations, policies and procedures and provide technical assistance.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with clients, families, agency staff, community service agencies and facilities, and the general public.
Ability to clearly express ideas verbally, and in writing.
Ability to maintain confidentiality at all times.
Ability to read, write, speak, understand and communicate in English to perform the duties of this position.
