The County of Riverside's Transportation Department has multiple opportunities for an Engineering Aide or Technician I/II supporting the Traffic Engineering division in Riverside.
The Engineering Aide or Technician will perform studies for establishing speed limits, manage traffic count and traffic investigations, deploy the department's radar trailer for speed checks, prepare engineering maps and plans, and other duties as required. Please note that this position requires being outdoors to perform field work.
Competitive candidates will possess ArcGIS program and MicroStation experience, and experience working in civil, transportation, or traffic engineering.
The Engineering Technician II is the journey level classification in the Engineering Technician series and the first working level classification for traffic and transportation engineering projects, and reports to an appropriate supervisory or manager level position.
The Engineering Technician II is distinguished from the Engineering Technician I in that the former is the fully qualified journey level in the series. The level at which this position will be filled will be at the department's discretion. Advancement to the next level in the Engineering Technician series is obtained by competitive selection through an open recruitment.

Transportation Engineering:
• Perform limited design of roadways and appurtenant structures; revise elements of simple engineering designs within established limits.
• Calculate and compute quantity and cost of materials for a variety of construction projects; prepare maps using manual or computer aided techniques.
• Enter appropriate computer commands into system for mapping processes; digitize maps for data entry; operate plotter for computerized map preparation.
• Investigate and make diagrams, reports, and recommendations on high accident locations and other sites; coordinate traffic census programs; collect, interpret, record, and make graphical presentations from information gathered in traffic, transportation and other studies and surveys.
• Perform moderately difficult sub-professional field and office Engineering work.
• Set up and maintain filing and indexing systems for road record documents, survey records, maps, transportation data, and other engineering record materials.
• Inspect the construction of less complex public works projects and subdivision tracts to assure compliance with plans and specifications.
• Field duties: transport and set mobile radar feedback trailer; investigate traffic concerns from the public, measure and determine placement of traffic control signs and markings, conduct sight distance measurements,
• Make computations and record readings; check and prepare field notes; may act as Party Chief on a short term relief basis.
• Office Duties: Draft geometric alignment, cross-sectional, and profile drawings and maps using manual or computer aided techniques.
• Conduct title and property owner research; prepare legal descriptions and various legal documents relating to real property; calculate bearings, distances, areas, and perform other calculations.
• Under direct supervision, preform responsible sub-professional civil engineering work of a technically specialized nature in connection with traffic engineering. Complete traffic related investigations and provide reports and recommendations; collects, interprets, records, and makes graphical presentations of information gathered. OPTION I

(Completion of college level courses from an accredited college or university in civil engineering or closely related subjects to the assignment such as land surveying, soils erosion, soils testing, blueprint reading, mathematics, computer graphics, or hydrology may substitute for the required experience on the basis of 12 semester or 18 quarter units equaling one year of the required full-time experience.)
OPTION II
Certificate: Valid Certificate of Registration as an Engineer-in-Training or Surveyor-in-Training issued by the California State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers may substitute for two years of sub-professional engineering experience.
ALL OPTIONS
Knowledge of: Elementary algebra, geometry and trigonometry as they apply to engineering; manual and automated drafting techniques; survey principles and methods; the principles and methods of materials testing, hydrography and traffic control.
Ability to: Make accurate engineering computations; follow oral and written directions; prepare clear and accurate diagrams and drawings from field notes and rough sketches; make a variety of soils and materials tests; perform survey field work, tabulate and analyze data and prepare reports; learn techniques of manual and automated drafting; maintain effective working relations with others.

OPTION I
Experience: Three years of sub-professional civil engineering experience. (Completion of college level courses from an accredited college or university in civil engineering or closely related subjects to the assignment such as land surveying, soils erosion, soils testing, blueprint reading, mathematics, computer graphics, or hydrology may substitute for up to two years of the required experience on the basis of 12 semester or 18 quarter units equaling one year of the required full-time experience.)
OPTION II
Education: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in surveying engineering or civil engineering.
OPTION III
Experience: Three years of sub-professional civil engineering experience. (A valid Certificate of Registration as an Engineer-in-Training or Surveyor-in-Training issued by the California State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers may substitute for two years of the required sub-professional engineering experience.)
ALL OPTIONS
Knowledge of: Mathematics including algebra, geometry and trigonometry; the basic practices of engineering design and construction, traffic control and land surveying; manual and automated drafting techniques; field and office procedures relating to hydrography; procedures related to construction inspection.
Ability to: Read and interpret legal descriptions, engineering drawings, assist in the preparation of designs, plans, estimates, reports, and specifications; collect and analyze traffic, transportation, and other data and prepare reports, interpretations and recommendations; compile and enter data into computer system for computer aided mapping; perform field work, inspect public works projects and subdivision tracts; maintain effective relations with others.
