What are the responsibilities and job description for the Public Works Worker I/II position at County of San Luis Obispo?
Public Works Worker I and II are part of a career series for Public Works Worker I (Trainee), II, III, IV, and Leadworker. Classes in this series perform a wide variety of unskilled, semi-skilled, and skilled work in all phases of maintenance, repair and construction of roads, flood control, and other County public works facilities; and do other related work as required.
Typical Tasks and Representative Duties
Performs various types of unskilled to skilled work connected with the maintenance and repair of roads, hydraulic facilities, buildings and grounds, bridges and other public work structures such as painting road symbols, erecting road signs and installing concrete forms; loading and unloading trucks; spreading and tamping paving materials or gravel; reconstructing, patching and repairing roads, removing or trimming trees and cutting brush; removing weeds and clearing rights-of-way on roads and channels; applying herbicides in accordance with the weed control program; cleaning culverts, drains, and ditches; repairing and maintaining fences along County roads; operates road equipment as needed; acts as flag person and does routine servicing on equipment; uses a variety of hand and power tools.
Public Works Worker I: Under close supervision, performs a wide variety of work in all areas of public works; becomes skilled in the driving and operation of light trucks and other motorized equipment; acquires skill in the use of a variety of hand and power tools.
Public Works Worker II: Under supervision, performs a wide variety of unskilled to skilled work in all areas of public works as a first level journeyworker, including the driving and operation of light trucks, skiploaders, mowers, rollers, sweepers, small tractors and attachments, paint stripers and tree-crew equipment; may operate heavy equipment in apprenticeship or as required on a temporary basis.

Public Works Worker II: A valid driver's license is required at the time of application. A valid CALIFORNIA Class A driver's license is required at the time of appointment and must be maintained throughout employment.
