As an Airport Maintenance Worker II, you will perform a variety of tasks including but not limited to the repair of electrical and plumbing systems, framing, finish woodwork and carpeting, asphalt and concrete repair, painting, and landscape maintenance. This role demands a versatile skill set ranging from mechanical repairs to grounds keeping, all aimed at keeping our airports operating safely and efficiently.
About the County of San Mateo Airports Division Located in the scenic settings of Northern California, the Half Moon Bay and San Carlos Airports are integral parts of the County of San Mateo’s aviation landscape. Both airports serve as vital assets to the community, not only in terms of transportation but also as crucial hubs for emergency services, disaster relief, and community safety. The airports provide a variety of emergency services and response functions including Air-Ambulance and Medivac flights, law enforcement and homeland security patrols, and Coast Guard sea-rescue operations.
The selected candidate will perform duties, which will include but are not limited to:
- Conduct regular inspections of airport facilities to ensure safety and proper functioning.
- Maintain overall appearance of airport grounds and facilities, including controlling weeds and trash pick-up.
- Operate a variety of motor vehicles such as utility trucks, pickup trucks, sweeping machines, boom and scissor lifts, tractors, skid steers, forklifts and other related equipment.
- Maintain aircraft hangars by inspecting, cleaning and repairing of the metal siding, floors, electrical systems and door mechanisms.
- Repair and maintain various airport electrical systems.
- Perform airfield and parking lot pavement striping to ensure that markings are vivid.
- Clean and sweep pavement surfaces and mow airfield grassy areas; perform weed control activities; maintain airport grounds including landscaped areas, lawns, and irrigation systems.
- Perform general maintenance and cleaning of airport buildings, HVAC systems, and painting as needed.
- Operate and maintain equipment or hand tools used in the cleaning and maintenance of buildings, grounds, and facilities.
- Operate light and heavy-duty vehicle to transport materials.
- Monitor and order supplies for airport maintenance and facilities.
- Complete work orders and daily reports as directed to accurately reflect activities performed.
- May be required to be on-call and/or respond to airport maintenance emergencies after hours.
- Train other maintenance staff as needed.
- Perform related duties as assigned.

Education and Experience:
Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to qualify is:
- One year of experience providing building and facility maintenance and minor equipment repair.
Licensure/Certification:
Possession of a valid class C California driver license or equivalent
Knowledge of:
- Methods, materials, operations, tools, and practices used in moving, loading, arranging, and transporting materials, records, and supplies.
- Principles and techniques used in basic custodial services, building maintenance, and minor equipment repair.
- Fixtures, building hardware, and equipment.
- Safety regulations, precautions, and practices.
- Methods, practices, and equipment used in the receipt, storage, handling, and ordering of materials and equipment.
Skill/Ability to:
- Follow safety practices.
- Follow oral and written instructions.
- Communicate effectively and tactfully with customers and others.
- Make accurate estimates of time and materials required to perform the job.
- Properly use and care for vehicles, tools, and equipment used in the job.
- Lift, carry, push, or move materials, supplies, or equipment up to 50 pounds.
- Climb ladders up to 60 feet.
- Walk or stand for long periods of time.

Current County of San Mateo employees with at least six months (1040 hours) of continuous service in classified regular, probationary, Confidential or Management extra-help/limited term position prior to the final filing date will receive five points added to their final passing score on this examination.
The examination will consist of a performance test (weight: 100%). Depending on the number of applicants, an application appraisal of education and experience may be used in place of other examinations or further evaluation of work experience may be conducted to group applicants by level of qualification. All applicants who meet the minimum qualifications are not guaranteed advancement through any subsequent phase of the examination. All examinations will be given in San Mateo County, California and applicants must participate at their own expense.
