What are the responsibilities and job description for the Systems Administrator Technician position at County of Santa Clara?
Under supervision, to install, maintain and upgrade the County's IT infrastructure environment; to monitor the infrastructure systems and applications, and respond to problems.
Candidates who meet the employment standards will be invited to complete a required online examination, tentatively scheduled to open on May 19, 2025.Qualifying candidates will be notified via email with instructions for taking the online examination.
- Creates/modifies/deletes/disables user access rights;
- Documents new or modified functions, modules and test activities/results according to specified guidelines and on selected media;
- Assists in managing technical changes, verifying testing results, and monitoring technical standards compliance and deployment;
- Participates in simple infrastructure administration project efforts with IT groups;
- Assists in monitoring production, outputs, and services to help ensure that SLAs/OLAs, and other quality metrics, are being met;
- Assists with gathering required information for reporting on security issues;
- Helps to develop new alerts and monitoring techniques;
- Assists in evaluating and implementing infrastructure enhancements to improve the reliability, scalability, sustainability, and availability of the infrastructure environment;
- Performs software installations and upgrades to less complex IT infrastructure systems and applications; applies infrastructure system updates, patches, and configuration changes;
- Assists with troubleshooting problems by analyzing root causes and evaluating solution alternatives;
- Collects and maintains tracking and configuration documentation and plans;
- Supports and participates in the formal reporting of project status;
- Gathers data pertaining to customer needs, and assists with identifying system requirements;
- May be assigned as a Disaster Service Worker, as required;
- Performs other related duties.
Training and Experience Note:
Possession of 60 semester units or 90 quarter units from an accredited college in Computer Science, Information Systems, or other related field, or technical institute degree/certificate in Computer Science, Information Systems, or other related field.
OR
Two (2) years of experience in one of the following areas: installing or supporting infrastructure hardware or software, applications, or operating systems.
Special Requirements
- Ability to travel to alternate locations in the course of work. If driving, possession of a valid California driver's license prior to appointment and the ability to qualify for and maintain a County driver authorization.
- Depending on the position, related certifications may be desirable.
Knowledge of:
- User access rights;
- Infrastructure administration;
- Basic understanding of Server Operating Systems, Systems Virtualization, Storage, Data Protection Solutions, IAM, Monitoring and other core IT Infrastructure Applications;
- Scripting language for process automation;
- Alerts and monitoring techniques;

- Operational metrics for performance and process improvements;
