Under general supervision, to perform a variety of general cleaning, janitorial work and routine duties in the maintenance and repair of buildings, grounds and maintenance duties; and to perform other duties as required.

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
(The following is used as a partial description and is not restrictive as to duties required.)Performs a variety of cleaning duties such as sweeping, mopping, and scrubbing floors; cleans and vacuums rugs and carpets; cleans hallways, lobbies, restrooms, and offices; cleans ceilings, walls, blinds, and light fixtures; empties and cleans waste receptacles; cleans and disinfects restrooms; replenishes supplies; may wash windows; may move and arrange furniture and equipment; turns out lights and locks doors and windows; replaces light bulbs and tubes; operates scrubbers, buffers, waxers and other equipment and machinery; requisitions supplies as needed; replaces florescent and incandescent lamps; cleans lighting fixtures and reflectors; moves and relocates office furniture and equipment; performs minor tasks in carpentry, painting, electrical and plumbing work in addition to grounds maintenance work; may be required to work nights, weekends and holidays. Frequently stand and walk for extended periods on uneven terrain and on slippery surfaces; stoop, kneel, and crouch to pick up or move objects, office equipment, and furniture; ability to crawl through various areas requiring movement on hands and knees; physical ability to lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 lbs. without assistance; physical ability to lift and move heavier objects with assistance; some exposure to communicable disease; normal manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination; corrected vision and hearing to normal range; verbal communication; uses vacuum cleaners, scrubbers, buffers, waxing equipment, and basic hand tools and power equipment; operate an automobile.

TYPICAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTSFrequently stand and walk for extended periods on uneven terrain and on slippery surfaces; stoop, kneel, and crouch to pick up or move objects, office equipment, and furniture; ability to crawl through various areas requiring movement on hands and knees; physical ability to lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 lbs. without assistance; physical ability to lift and move heavier objects with assistance; some exposure to communicable disease; normal manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination; corrected vision and hearing to normal range; verbal communication; uses vacuum cleaners, scrubbers, buffers, waxing equipment, and basic hand tools and power equipment; operate an automobile.TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONSWork is performed in building and outdoor environments; work is performed in varying temperatures; some exposure to controlled and hazardous substances such as cleaning solvents and chemicals, dust, and gases; exposure to communicable disease; some contact with staff and the public.DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICSThis is a working level Custodian/Maintenance Worker classification. Incumbents perform the full range of janitorial duties in addition to routine maintenance and repair of buildings. Work is performed under general guidance and supervision.DISASTER SERVICE WORKERIn addition to our everyday duties, we have an added responsibility to help in a declared disaster. Under California law, all public employees are Disaster Service Workers and may be called upon in the event of a disaster. The roles and responsibilities for Disaster Service Workers are authorized by the California Emergency Services Act and are defined in the California Government Code 3100-3102; Labor Code 3211.92(b).
