Plan, supervise and evaluate the work of environmental health staff assigned to an area of environmental quality control programs; advise on the interpretation and application of laws, ordinances, regulations and policies; develop and implement programs and procedures; instruct staff in methods of inspection and enforcement procedures; assist district Environmental Health Specialists in solving difficult problems; coordinate program activities, including inspections and investigations, with other state and local agencies; supervise the review and approval of emergency response, site assessment and remediation, and construction plans for conformance to laws, regulations and ordinances; confer with and advise other agencies and groups on environmental quality control matters; assist staff in planning and conducting public education programs; make presentations to the public; provide administrative assistance in compiling work load data and distribution of information; prepare reports and correspondence; develop effective data retrieval systems; assist in the development of policies.
Education: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree in environmental health science or closely related field
Experience: Three years of experience as a registered environmental health specialist.
Knowledge of: Principles and practices of environmental quality control, sanitation and public health; chemistry, biology, microbiology, geology, hydrology and environmental health sciences sufficient to evaluate air and water emissions, sewage and drinking water systems, solid waste management, land use constraints, and hazardous material issues; advanced math including algebra, geometry and statistical analysis; Federal and State laws and regulations governing environmental quality control, water and land use, public health sanitation, hazardous materials, and solid waste management; proper sampling procedures for laboratory analysis and field test procedures; relevant scientific and technical terminology; methods and techniques for interviewing, investigating, conducting inspections and resolving air and water pollution problems and unsanitary conditions; environmental research and statistical methods; basic water works construction features; methods of design, construction and operation of sewage disposal systems, swimming pools, and wells sufficient to evaluate plans.

License/Certificate: A valid Environmental Health Specialist certificate of registration issued by the California State Department of Health Services.
Desirable: Registered Dairy Inspector License
