Major Functions
The County of Volusia is seeking an experienced Equipment Operator III for the Road and Bridge Division. This position may report to various locations inside Volusia County, Florida, and provides skilled work in the operation of heavy equipment to complete road maintenance and drainage tasks; transports heavy equipment to job sites throughout the county; and performs daily safety inspections of assigned equipment prior to and after each use.

Completion of the eighth (8th) grade and three (3) years of experience in the operation and maintenance of heavy construction equipment.
Must possess a valid Florida CDL Class B at the time of hire and maintain thereafter. If assigned to drainage operations, must possess a valid Florida CDL Class A within six (6) months of hire and maintain thereafter.
A comparable amount of education, training, or experience may be substituted for the minimum requirements.
Must possess a valid driver's license at the time of hire and maintain thereafter. Must possess and maintain a valid Florida driver's license within thirty (30) days of hire.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Physical Demands: Heavy work. Ability to pull, push, lift, and carry 75 pounds. Ability to reach, climb, sit, turn (neck, body), handle, and see (near and far acuity, depth perception, field of vision). Visual acuity (depth perception, peripheral vision) necessary to operate motorized vehicles.
Environmental Demands:(Demands may change depending on assignment.) Outside work. Exposure to inclement weather (heat, humidity, cold, rain), fumes, odors, noise, vibration, dust, poor ventilation.
Mental Demands: Ability to read and comprehend operational and safety instructions, procedures, rules, policies, warnings, memos. Ability to write simple sentences relaying information, data, and details. Ability to perform basic math.

- Operates 10-wheel commercial trucks.
- Operates equipment, such as front-end loader, backhoe, skid steer.
- May place and remove pipe.
- May operate truck-mounted pavement striping machine.
- May operate a motor grader on construction and maintenance work.
- May operate a heavy-duty gasoline or diesel road roller compacting equipment.
- Loads aggregates and construction materials.
- May operate a bulldozer.
- May operate a lowboy to transport equipment to and from job sites.
- Participates generally in the laboring work of the crew as workload demands.
- Performs daily safety inspections of assigned equipment prior to and after use.
- Performs routine service and maintenance of equipment.
- Attends work on a regular and consistent basis.
- Responds to emergency situations.
- Must adhere to Federal, State, County, and Local ordinances.
- May be assigned to other county locations based upon operational needs.
- Performs duties and responsibilities of an Equipment Operator II.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
