The County of Yolo is recruiting to fill multiple regular, full-time positions in the class of Deputy Sheriff Recruit Trainee at the Yolo County Sheriff's Office.

COMPENSATION
Employees are eligible to receive additional compensation, up to a total of 15% of base, by stacking a maximum of two of the following incentives:

2.5% for possession of a 2 year degree
7.5% for possession of a 4 year degree
10% for possession of post graduate degree 

Incumbents that complete California P.O.S.T. Basic law enforcement training will advance to the Deputy Sheriff class. The annual salary range for the Deputy Sheriff class is $95,201.60 - $115,710.40.

THE POSITION
Under close supervision, to develop sufficient knowledge and skill to perform Deputy Sheriff level responsibilities independently which includes learning the regulations and laws of the State of California; the legal methods and techniques of arrest, search, and seizure; the principles of investigation; and to do related work as required.

The Deputy Sheriff Recruit-Trainee class is an entry Academy training level classification. Under close supervision, incumbents typically train and  report to a journey level Deputy Sheriff or Sergeant, and attend Basic Peace Officer Standard Training (POST) academy to learn the principles, methods, and techniques employed by the Deputy Sheriff class. Positions in this class are distinguished from Deputy Sheriff in that the Deputy Sheriff Recruit-Trainee is a non-sworn class, which has no peace officer powers. Deputy Sheriff Recruit-Trainees are eligible for promotion to Deputy Sheriff upon successful completion of a Basic Peace Officer Standard Training academy usually within one year of hire. Incumbents who do not successfully complete academy training and promote to Deputy Sheriff will be terminated from the Recruit-Trainee classification.

CANDIDATES THAT ARE CURRENTLY ATTENDING A CALIFORNIA P.O.S.T LAW ENFORCEMENT TRAINING ACADEMY ARE ENCOURAGED TO APPLY!
Most incumbents typically perform the following duties, but other related duties may also be performed:

(In a training capacity)
  • Prevent crime, apprehend suspects, control traffic, and enforce criminal and civil laws and regulations;
  • Conduct preliminary criminal and civil investigations;
  • May assist in the guarding, control, and supervision of inmates at the detention facility while waiting to attend the law enforcement academy.
  • Serve and administer various civil and criminal documents;
  • Effect custody and insure safe storage of held property and evidence;
  • Prepare incident, traffic, and daily activity reports.
  • Observe assigned area for suspicious acts and unsafe conditions;
  • Confer with appropriate parties in serving civil processes;
  • Effect eviction and seize personal property ties;
  • Perform other related duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • (a) Must be 21 years of age at time of appointment.
  • (b) Must be a United States citizen.
  • (c) Graduation from high school or possession of G.E.D. certificate.
  • (d) Physical and Psychological requirements: Must be in good physical condition and must pass a thorough medical and psychological examination; meet State of California Peace Officers Standards and Training (POST) vision and hearing requirements.

Background Requirements:
(a) Shall not have been convicted of a felony in California, or any other state or  Federal jurisdiction, which would have been a felony if committed in this state.
(b) Shall have good moral character as determined by a thorough background investigation according to specifications of the State of California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training.

License:  Positions in this classification require incumbents to possess and maintain a valid California driver's license, Class C or higher, to carry out job related duties. Individuals who do not meet this requirement due to a physical or mental disability may request a reasonable accommodation.

Knowledge of and Ability to:  comprehend and retain factual information pertaining to policies, rules, regulations, and laws; analyze situations and/or data and draw meaningful conclusions leading to a reasonable course of action; effectively communicate both verbally and in writing; write clear , comprehensive reports and accurately remember names, faces, numbers and events;  establish and maintain effective working relationships with others and adopt quick, effective, and reasonable course of action under emergency conditions; ability to exercise care in proper driving of a department vehicle.

The following is a tentative schedule of events that will occur as part of the selection process.  The selection process steps may change with or without notice.
 
  • Screen for Minimum Qualifications: Week of 2/17-2/21
  • Physical Agility Exam: Week of 3/17-3/21
  • POST Written Exam (PELLETB): Week of 3/17-3/21 
  • Department Selection Interviews
  • Background Investigation
  • Final interview with the Sheriff and/or the Sheriff's designee 
  • Conditional Job Offer, pending:
    • Psychological Examination
    • Medical Examination

PHYSICAL AGILITY EXAM
All candidates meeting the minimum qualifications will be invited to the physical performance examination has been designed to measure the minimally acceptable levels of performance in tasks which current sworn personnel may encounter on duty, but which requires no special police training in order to complete. This examination will be comprised of a series of physical challenges that may include all or a combination of the following challenges:

  • 500 Yard Run
  • 165 LB Body Drag 
  • Climbing a wall that is (approximately) six feet in height
  • Physical agility course

WRITTEN EXAM
All candidates who pass the physical agility exam will be invited to the written examination. Exam information is outlined below.
 
  • Qualified applicants will be notified of the exact date, time, and location of the examination to the email address included in the application.  
  • This exam will be a multiple-choice examination that assesses the key knowledge, skills, and abilities that are required for this position.  
  • Applicants achieving a passing score will be placed on the eligible list in rank order. The rank is determined by the test score attained from the examination, in conjunction with any county or veteran's preference points.
  • The PELLETB examination is authored by California P.O.S.T
  • If you have taken this exam within the last twelve months and wish to transfer your score received from the exam in lieu of re-taking the exam please submit verification of your T-Score for further review. Documentation must be received prior to the examination date and must include the following information: Date of exam, title of exam, score received, and must be on agency letterhead.
