General Description: The Speech Language Pathologist (SLP) works with students having speech/language impariments to help remediate the impairment in one-on-one, small group settings, or via push-in services dependent on written IEPs for students who qualify for varying degrees of special needs.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Serves as a member of the district’s multidisciplinary team process to evaluate, analyze, assess, and make recommendations regarding the speech/language therapy needs of students ages 3-21. 
  • Designs yearly programs for implementing therapy services for students, in keeping with district and state guidelines.
  • Identifies students with speech/language therapy needs either by screening procedures or by a system of teacher referral through Multi-Tiered Systems of Support.
  • Evaluates students with speech/language therapy needs to determine the cause, nature, prognosis, goals, and recommendations for remediation.
  • Conducts a consistent and detailed therapy program for students with a variety of abilities as well as develop specific activities appropriate to remediation of various speech impairments.
  • Maintains appropriate records of techniques used and their effectiveness with individual students.
  • Provides information and assistance to teachers and other appropriate school personnel and non-public school agencies through such activities as consultation and inservice education.
  • Consults with parents and staff relative to students’ speech/language therapy needs.
  • Participates in activities which ensure professional growth.
  • Uses data to measure program effectiveness; conducts assessments and interprets assessment data.
  • Understands and follows policies as adopted by the school district.
  • Fulfills other job related responsibilities as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
- Must have, or be eligible for, certification as an SLP, or Bachelor's degree in Speech/Hearing Sciences, or equivalent;
- at least two years of study at an institution of higher education (72 quarter hours or 48 semester hours, all at a 100 level or above), or
- an associate’s (or higher) degree;
- the ability to document student records in a timely manner using computer based technology;
- experience and demonstrated ability assisting children with speech/language skills by using current methods and techniques in a school or clinical setting;
- dxperience in using a problem solving structure to identify student interventions;
- a demonstrated ability (or ability to learn) district policies and rules, regulations, and compliance issues defined in the Washington Administrative Codes (WAC);
- the ability to work effectively and collaboratively with staff;
- a helpful, calm, friendly, polite and positive demeanor when interacting with others;
- the ability to make reasoned decisions and set appropriate expectations for individual students;
- strong communication skills; and
- appropriate discretion concerning students, staff, and confidential or privileged information.

Working Conditions:

  • Works in an office, classroom, or other available setting.
  • Moves between offices and between school campuses in routine job functions.
  • Uses a computer to maintain required notes and to access student information.
