Substitute School Nurse Job Description
A substitute nurse providing services on the campus of Covenant Academy of Mobile is responsible for providing temporary healthcare services to students in the absence of the regular school nurse. These services include administering basic first aid, managing minor illnesses, responding to emergencies, and communicating with parents and school staff regarding student health concerns; all while adhering to state and district guidelines on student health practices.
Key responsibilities may include:
Care of students with common health complaints:
Utilize the nursing process to conduct proper nursing assessment,
make nursing diagnosis and implement focused interventions. Evaluate
their outcomes.
Health screenings:
Conducting basic health checks, including taking vital signs and monitoring student health conditions.
Perform basic first aid:
Assessing and treating minor injuries like cuts, scrapes, and bruises,
including applying bandages and cleaning wounds.
Illness management:
Addressing minor illnesses like headaches, stomachaches, and fevers, including providing over-the-counter medications as authorized. Care for students with chronic conditions by following their established individualized healthcare plan or emergency care plan.
Emergency response:
Responding promptly to medical emergencies like allergic reactions, seizures, or fainting, providing immediate care and contacting
emergency services when necessary.
Medication administration:
Administering prescribed medications to students as per physician orders and district protocols.
Communication:
Maintaining clear communication with school staff, parents, and the regular school nurse regarding student health concerns and necessary
follow-up actions.
Documentation:
Accurately documenting all student health incidents and interventions in accordance with district policy.
Compliance with regulations:
Adhering to state and district guidelines regarding student health, communicable disease control, and confidentiality.
Important considerations:
Substitute role:
This is a temporary position, filling in for the regular school nurse when they are absent.
Reporting structure:
The Nurse Substitute will report directly to the school principal and the district school nurse.
Training:
May be required to complete additional training specific to school nursing practices within the Mobile County Public School System.
- Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of Alabama.
- Current CPR certification
- Experience in providing basic first aid and managing minor illnesses in a school setting is preferred.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively interact with students, staff, and parents.
- Ability to work independently and make quick decisions in emergency situations.
Compensation
The daily rate for nurse substitutes: RN - $240/day and LPN $188/day.
