JOB DESCRIPTION : Provides competent support and assistance to the special education classroom teacher in the full implementation of the instructional programs of the school. Meets and instructs assigned groups and individuals in the locations and at the times designated by the teacher.Presents materials required in the teaching assignment within the content limitations of the system curriculum guides and under the direction of the teacher. Helps the teacher implement programs of study that, as much as possible meet the individual needs, interests, and abilities of the students. Assists in creating a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students. Follows the provided classroom schedule consistently. Prepares for groups and / or individuals assigned, and shows evidence of such preparation. Provides the teacher input for assessing the accomplishments of students. Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities. Collects accurate and complete IEP goal data as required. Assists in implementing all policies and / or rules governing student life and conduct. Assists the teacher to enforce reasonable rules of classroom behavior and maintains order in the classroom in a fair and just manner. Provides feedback to learners about their academic progress and behavior. Attends staff meetings and serves on staff committees as required. Reproduces, organizes, distributes, and collects instructional materials for implementation of instructional programs. Complies with any reasonable oral or written directive of the teacher, the principal, or other appropriate administrator or supervisor.Maintains strict confidentiality of all student information. Provides support and supervision of students in a variety of settings. Assists in the collection of student data and in compiling and organizing data for review by the teacher. Assists students with activities of daily living (grooming, toileting, eating, health and safety issues), as required. Performs basic health procedures (tube feeding, clean intermittent bladder catheterization), as required, following successful completion of required training.Participates successfully in training programs designed to increase skill and proficiency related to job assignment, as well as procedures to be used with students with disabilities. Participates in required district training for Mindset Safety Management Deescalation and utilizes techniques according to individual student needs.Assists with the implementation of positive behavioral support / interventions. Follows all safety procedures and training protocols when lifting students and in the operation of wheelchairs and other equipment. Demonstrates the ability to perform special duties as required for meeting the unique needs of specific student populations, such as lifting and repositioning students with physical disabilities.
REQUIRED EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION OR TRAINING : Qualify for a Paraprofessional Certificate by either holding an Associate's Degree or higher or 90 college quarter hours / 60 semester hours, or pass the assessment test for paraprofessionals (GACE).REQUIRED SKILLS : The ability to organize and direct small and large groups of children in a variety of activities and settings.The ability to adjust to changing conditions and situations.
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE : Experience working with and directing the activities of children.
