General Definition of Work

Performs intermediate semiskilled work performing grounds maintenance duties involving County grounds, recreational areas, right-of-ways and open spaces, and in the transportation and supervision of community service workers. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the assigned supervisor. Continuous supervision is exercised over the Community Service Worker as assigned.

Essential Functions

Performs maintenance of Public Works Facilities outdoor areas and landscaping which includes cutting grass, watering, planting flowers, bushes or trees, pruning trees and bushes, blowing sidewalks and parking lots, spreading mulch or pine straw, mixing and spreading fertilizer, and weed control by mixing and spreading weed killer.

Prepares schedule for outdoor maintenance and procures supplies as needed such as trimmer cords, oil and chains.

Operates assigned vehicle and lawn equipment including washing, basic maintenance of lawn equipment, sharpening tools and keeping all items organized and secure.

Collects and disposes trash, debris and cuttings.

Collects and disposes of various items to scrap yard or recycling center.

Maintains walking paths and fences by repairing and pressure washing.

Transports community service program participants to and from assigned locations, issues any necessary tools, and monitors the performance of assigned tasks, ensuring safe and orderly conduct.

Exercises oversight of the community service workers in assigned tasks and reports any inappropriate conduct to the correct authority.

Observes and keeps account of community service workers engaged in the performance of assigned maintenance, repair or litter removal and clean up tasks.

Communicates via telephone and / or two-way radio and responds to inquiries, complaints, and service requests.

Works a variable schedule (i.e. weekends, special events) occasionally.

Encourages and promotes a culture of excellent service.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Thorough knowledge of the practices and procedures of ground maintenance; thorough knowledge of methods and equipment used in ground maintenance activities; thorough knowledge of building and equipment maintenance and construction techniques; ability to read and understand maps; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public.

Education and Experience

High school diploma or GED and moderate experience in the operation of motorized equipment, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Physical Requirements

This work requires the regular exertion of up to 10 pounds of force and frequent exertion of up to 25 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 50 pounds of force; work regularly requires speaking or hearing and using hands to finger, handle or feel, frequently requires sitting, reaching with hands and arms and repetitive motions and occasionally requires standing, walking, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, tasting or smelling, pushing or pulling and lifting; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and / or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and / or small parts, use

of measuring devices, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work occasionally requires exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to outdoor weather conditions, exposure to the risk of electrical shock, wearing a self-contained breathing apparatus and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment; work is generally in a very loud noise location (e.g. jackhammer work, garbage recycle plant).

Special Requirements

Favorable background history as determined by review of local, State and Federal records.

Valid driver’s license in the State of Georgia with a favorable driving history (MVR).
