Scheduled Hours 37.5 Position Summary Washington University in St. Louis (Washington University), one of the nation’s premier private institutions of higher education, seeks nominations and applications for the career-defining role of Executive Vice Chancellor and Chief Administrative Officer (CAO). Reporting directly to the chancellor and serving as an officer of the university, the CAO works with senior leaders across the enterprise to ensure operational excellence that enables the core missions of the university—education, research, and patient care—and fosters a collaborative and inclusive culture that is a hallmark of Washington University. Job Description Primary Duties & Responsibilities Serves as a member of the Chancellor’s executive cabinet and is the key point person for university operations providing strategic counsel to executive leadership. Oversees core administrative divisions for the university including human resources and institutional equity, procurement, supplier diversity, environmental health & safety, and information technology (managed jointly). In addition, directs operations at the seven academic schools comprising the Danforth campus that include facilities management (campus planning & construction, plant operations, and sustainability), public safety (police and emergency preparedness), university services (campus dining, parking and transportation, campus card services), global travel, and ombuds. Works closely with the Chancellor, the Provost, and the Chief Financial Officer, the CAO is broadly responsible for ensuring operational excellence across the university, including both direct responsibility for administrative functions specific to the Danforth campus and central fiscal unit as well as coordination with administrative functions that are administered at the School of Medicine campus. Leads a high-performing team of dedicated professionals with approximately 1,250 total staff and 8 direct reports. Direct reports to the CAO include Vice Chancellor for Technology and CIO (jointly with EVC of Medical Affairs); Vice Chancellor for Human Resources and Institutional Equity; Associate Vice Chancellor of Facilities and Campus Planning, Assistant Vice Chancellor for University Services; Assistant Vice Chancellor for Environmental Health and Safety; Chief of Police; University Ombuds; including a Chief of Staff and an administrative team. Preferred Qualifications Advanced degree in business/public administration, organizational leadership, or related field. Significant experience working with executive leadership, board members, and/or key external stakeholders to advance strategic plans and initiatives. Demonstrated track record of advancing the goals of diversity, equity, and inclusion. Experience navigating a complex, matrix management structure and building consensus through influence to achieve business/organizational objectives. Proven ability to leverage process improvement, project management, and change management methods/practices to continuously monitor and improve operational performance and customer/stakeholder experience. Team player with outstanding collaboration skills; strong interpersonal skills and diplomacy; superb listening and influencing skills; the ability to cultivate and sustain trust and credibility with colleagues. Demonstrated capacity to communicate effectively across an institution; the ability to convey technically complex information/concepts in accessible terms to a broad array of stakeholders. Strong people leader with the ability to effectively recruit, delegate, mentor, and support staff; and to provide successful oversight of budgets; ability to define and implement effective management structures and systems, establish and uphold high-performance standards, and sustain a culture of accountability, collaboration, and responsiveness. Strategic partner in developing organizational capacity and policies to attract, retain, and develop an engaged and capable workforce at all levels. Entrepreneurial thinker, able to think creatively across silos, and committed to facilitating collaborative activities/projects across organizational and disciplinary boundaries to foster innovation. Inspirational, energetic leader with a track record of success preferably with a background in a research or educational institution that has a life sciences or medical school or work that is analogous. Data-driven and creative problem solver with the ability to make difficult decisions and stand by them. Required Qualifications Qualified candidates will possess a bachelor’s degree, plus 15 years of progressive operations leadership experience in a large, multifaceted organization. Strategic leadership experience across a broad range of administrative functions such as HR/information technology/facilities/public safety/dining/procurement. Significant strategic planning and budget management experience at the division or enterprise level. Grade G00 Salary Range Base pay is commensurate with experience. The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
