Library Director
The Crawford County Library District is seeking a motivated individual who is passionate about public library services to fill our open Director position. The Director functions as the chief executive officer of a three branch county library system. It will be the duty of the Director to plan, manage and direct the operations, programs, services and personnel of the Library District.
Supervision Received: The position reports directly to the Crawford County Library District Board of Trustees, in the legal framework set forth by the Revised Statutes of the State of Missouri.
Position Duties and Responsibilities:
The following duties ARE NOT intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by the Director, only a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities.
- Oversees and directs the library system’s operations, including public services, technology, administration and facility management
- Ensures the delivery of high quality library services and programs to the Crawford County patrons
- Works in conjunction with the Crawford County Library District Board of Trustees to develop and maintain short and long term strategic plans for the county libraries
- Serves as the staff representative to the Board and prepares agendas and discussion items for scheduled Board meetings, prepares and presents staff reports and other correspondences such as budget updates, program scheduling and community outreach
- Manages the development and implementation of library goals, objectives, priorities, policies and procedures; ensures Board objectives are integrated into the library policies and goals
- Directs and participates in the development and administration of the annual capital, operating, and other assigned budgets
- Evaluates, determines, and requests additional funds necessary for staffing, equipment, materials, and supplies; develops and schedules equipment purchases and replacements with Board approval
- Establishes appropriate service levels and allocates resources, including staffing, accordingly
- Hires, trains, supervises and monitors the performance of all personnel; coordinates the continued training and development of all staff members; maintain employee files with written, signed copies of all evaluations, counseling actions and other important information
- Monitors and evaluates service delivery methods and procedures; identifies and implements changes necessary to improve operational efficiency
- Oversees the maintenance of the library collection; develops policies in relation to the selection and the purchase of all library materials; continued growth of books, non-printed materials (to include audio and visual collection) and e-commerce materials to meet the needs of the communities
- Serves as a representative of the library and coordinates departmental activities with other division, departments, outside agencies, community organizations, and the media
- Interprets and explains library policies, procedures, programs to the public
- Responds confidentially to inquiries involving library related matters, negotiates and resolves complex, sensitive, and/or controversial issues and complaints
- Directs, attends, and participates in a variety of meetings, workshops, seminars, and conferences; serves on committees as assigned or needed
- Stays abreast of new trends and innovations in the field of public library management
- Promotes marketing and ongoing public awareness of library services and programs to the communities
- Secures and administers alternate funding sources of non-tax monies for operation and program enhancement; prepares state, federal and private grant applications and actively engages in fundraising efforts
- Creates and presents library statistics, circulation and user reports, tracks and reports feasibility regarding library hours, collection usage, etc.
- Must be able to work some weekend and evening hours
- Frequent travel required between the three county libraries
- Develop and manage adult programing, story time, and teen programs
- Completes all required reporting to County, State, and Federal Agencies
- Preforms other duties as assigned by the Crawford County Library District Board of Trustees
Special Working Conditions: Duties require extended periods of standing, walking, sitting and talking or hearing. Duties require occasional periods of climbing or balancing, pushing/pulling items, lifting/carrying items, keyboarding, reaching with hands and arms, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling. Weights up to 70 pounds are encountered. Vision requirements include close vision, distant vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. Hazards are considered minor and controllable, but may include exposure to human error and angry/hostile humans. Must be able to transport oneself to work-related meetings, workshops, conferences, etc.
Minimum Qualifications:
- At least 3 years experience in an administrative and managerial/supervisory capacity in a public library required
- Bachelor’s Degree in related field required; Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science from a graduate library program accredited by the America Library Association preferred

- Principles and practices of public library system administration
- Public library policies, procedures, and standards of service
- Federal, State and Local regulations governing public library operations
- Current trends in public library services, programing and technology
- Methods for evaluating public library programs, policies and operational requirements
- Processes for developing and administrating budgets
- Supervisory principles, practices and methods
- Directing public library operations, programs, and services
- Ensuring the delivery of quality library programs and services to the community
- Developing and implementing library goals, objectives, policies and procedures
- Responding to and resolving complex issues and complaints involving library related matters
- Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with others
- Developing and administering budgets and monitoring expenditures
- Supervising, leading and delegating tasks and authority
- Experience working in an ILS (MO Evergreen preferred)
- Working with library and other vendors (i.e. database vendors like EBSCO and Overdrive, book vendors, etc.)
Required Licenses or Certification
- Must possess a valid Missouri Driver’s License
Salary and Benefits: This is a full-time position. Salary range is $58,000 – $68,000 commensurate with education and experience. The Crawford County Library District offers a benefit package which includes medical, dental, and vision insurance, and a generous amount of paid time off.
