This role will feature both independent and collaborative project work with our growing team of urban land use and transportation planners. CMT’s land use planners often work as an extension of client staff to identify community needs and develop short- and long-term solutions to improve and revitalize communities and areas. Transportation planners focus on infrastructure solutions that promote vibrant, safe, and healthy communities. CMT’s transportation planning team works on transportation plans of many sizes and scales, with a focus on supporting multimodal transportation. As an area grows or changes, planners help communities manage economic, social, and environmental issues, such as new infrastructure, connecting people to jobs, planning for community amenities and making the region more attractive to businesses.

As a planner with CMT, responsibilities will include the preparation of corridor plans, citywide transportation plans, traffic calming, placemaking, land use comprehensive planning, conducting population and community trend analysis, and identification of approaches to revitalize physical facilities in towns, cities, counties, and metropolitan areas. Planning for and comfort with conducting public engagement and outreach initiatives, such as with public officials, developers and the public regarding transportation and land use plans is essential; Demonstrated ability to conduct field investigations to analyze factors affecting community development, redevelopment and address community decline; Familiarity with assessing and applying zoning codes; coordination with our traffic team on transportation planning work.

Experience in transportation planning and community development is preferred. Types of projects range in both large and small communities in the Midwest. The ability to work with engineers, landscape architects and economic development specialists is a must. Ability to understand and apply zoning codes is preferred. An understanding of transportation planning and general terminology/processes is preferred.
