In this role, you will collaborate with data engineers, architects, and technical leaders to create, maintain, and optimize documentation that supports internal policies, operational procedures, data governance practices, and onboarding processes for the data engineering and data architecture functions. Key Responsibilities
Documentation Development
Create clear, concise, and accurate documentation for data engineering and architecture practices, including:
- Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
- Data governance policies
- Security and compliance protocols
- System and platform architecture overviews
- Workflow diagrams, data flow models, and data lineage documentation
- Step-by-step technical setup guides
- Role-specific onboarding checklists
- Glossaries of terms and acronyms relevant to the data organization
- Orientation content on platforms, tools, and team processes
- Partner with subject matter experts (SMEs) such as data engineers, data architects, analysts, and DevOps to gather and verify content
- Participate in meetings and technical sessions to observe, ask questions, and take notes that inform documentation
- Maintain and organize documents within internal content management systems (e.g., Confluence, SharePoint, Notion, GitHub)
- Establish and promote documentation standards, templates, and version control practices to ensure consistency and reusability
- Process Improvement
- Continuously assess and improve existing documentation for clarity, usability, completeness, and accessibility
- Identify gaps in documentation coverage and proactively develop plans to address them Advocate for documentation best practices within the data organization
- 3 years of experience in technical writing, preferably in data engineering, software development, or IT environments
- Solid understanding of data-related concepts such as data pipelines, ETL/ELT, data warehouses, APIs, data modeling, and cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, GCP, Azure)
- Exceptional writing, editing, and proofreading skills with strong attention to detail
- Experience translating complex technical information into clear, audience-appropriate content
- Proficiency with documentation tools (e.g., Confluence, MadCap Flare, Markdown, Google Docs)
- Ability to create visual aids such as workflow diagrams and architecture schematics using tools like Lucidchart, Draw.io, or Visio
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills with a proactive and self-directed work style
- Experience in a regulated or data-sensitive industry (e.g., finance, healthcare, government) with an understanding of compliance requirements (e.g., GDPR, HIPAA)
- Familiarity with agile methodologies and working in cross-functional agile teams
- Prior experience onboarding technical staff or building structured onboarding programs
- Basic understanding of SQL, Python, or data engineering tools (e.g., GCP, Airflow, Databricks) is a plus
