Crew Janci LLP is a Portland-based law firm with a national practice representing survivors of sexual abuse, childhood sexual abuse, and other crimes. We are a small, close-knit group dedicated to using our varied expertise to help our clients seek civil justice.
POSITION DESCRIPTION:
We need a Litigation Paralegal to join our mission. A good fit for us is organized, compassionate, and experienced.
Our paralegals play an essential role in each of our cases. We have a collaborative office culture focused on obtaining results and this sets us apart from other firms.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Our Litigation Paralegals are detailed, diligent, motivated, and compassionate. Our new paralegal should be prepared to dive in and demonstrate excellence in the following exercises:
- Shepherding a high volume of cases through litigation and closing while reporting on progress.
- Discovery: tracking, managing, organizing, and analyzing discovery material from multiple sources.
- Anticipating discovery and investigative needs. Our paralegals are empowered to practice judgment and initiate the services needed.
- Tracking and docketing court and other deadlines, then prioritizing accordingly.
- Drafting, formatting, filing, and ordering service of pleadings, motions, and briefs.
- Learning and adapting to attorney needs in preparing for depositions, hearings, and trials.
- Preparing for trial: compiling materials, preparing and issuing subpoenas, managing exhibits, etc.
- Collaborating with attorneys and staff to keep cases moving. We keep open communication between all team members, from partners to administrators.
- Developing expertise in relevant state and federal court procedure and rules.
- Maintaining a sense of urgency about cases. Justice is long overdue for many of our clients.
- Maintaining professional rapport and regular contact with our clients. Our actions, especially in this regard, must reflect our values. Practice intentional and thoughtful communication with clients to prepare drafts and respond to discovery requests. Again, we must meet our clients’ resilience with respect.
- Receiving feedback and observing the established patterns in an open, constructive, and adaptable manner. Adjusting as needed. Providing feedback in the same manner.
- Caring for yourself such that you can add positivity to our team. The stories we are immersed in can be hard to accept, so self-care and commitment to a respectful, positive work environment is of the utmost importance.
- Identifying gaps in knowledge and judging capacity; utilizing support as needed.
- As a salaried position, the workload may require more than 40 hours of work per week. This requires working on an evening or weekend at times depending upon where we are in the litigation process on any given case. We may sometimes need to travel for a case.
Qualifications:
- Motivated by the prospect of collaborating on cases involving challenging and sensitive subject matter.
- Bachelor’s degree and paralegal certificate from an accredited institution or equivalent experience.
- Outstanding written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office (including Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) and comfortable with learning new technology.
- Experience working with case management software, like Clio.
- Flexibility in responding to quickly shifting demands.
- Ability to mind and prioritize strict and conflicting deadlines.
- Ability to maintain strict confidentiality of client and firm information.
BENEFITS:
This is a salaried position paying between $60,000 and $80,000 with opportunities for performance-based discretionary bonuses.
