Process Safety Engineer - Salt Lake City, UT
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Responsible for identifying process hazards, evaluating risks of those hazards, and developing effective solutions to mitigate risk.
- Develop comprehensive High Hazard/Process Safety Management (HH/PSM) programs that include but are not limited to Process Hazard Analysis (PHA) execution and follow-up to ensure timely closeout of findings; and effective implementation of HH/PSM program elements; development of KPIs; training and assuring compliance.
- Responsible for tracking key performance indicators (leading and lagging) to track the progress of HH/PSM program.
- Lead PHA on existing and new processes.
- Evaluate new processes and modify existing processes and facilities to meet new requirements. Works in tandem with maintenance and other engineering functions to develop, coordinate and evaluate maintenance programs for highly technical equipment for High Hazard Operations.
- Provide oversight for the site Management of Change (MOC) Processes.
- Manage the site PHA schedule and recommendation implementation plan.
- Leads and performs Root Cause Analysis (RCA) investigations for incidents and near misses across the plant.
- Provide oversight of and lead Pre-Startup Safety Reviews (PSSR) for site projects.
- Provide mentoring and create and deliver training for site personnel.
- Participates on teams responsible for implementing new procedures and processes related to EHS and HH/PSM.
- Participates as an active member of the HH/PSM network.
- Interacts with regulatory authorities for permits, inspections, and requests for information.
- Partners with Facilities to engage and interact with insurance companies as a site representative.
- Maintain technical expertise in HH/PSM and other EHS Regulations.
- Anticipate and evaluate the impact of changing regulatory requirements on operations. Provide guidance to site leadership teams.
- Will be working with Flammable Liquids, Ethylene Oxide Sterilizer and possible combustible dust.
BACKGROUND PROFILE:
- Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Environmental Health & Safety, Process Engineering, or equivalent.
- 3-5 years leading EHS processes in a manufacturing environment.
- Familiar with fourteen elements of Process Safety Management (PSM and the EPA’s Risk Management Plan (RMP) rule).
- Strong interpersonal skills, essential in dealing with people at all levels and in a variety of functions including: technical staff, business team leaders, operators, facilities and maintenance.
- Effective skills in the areas of counseling, coaching, and influencing.
- Understanding of federal and state safety and environmental laws and the ability to identify and evaluate workplace hazards and environmental requirements.
- Ability to work in a diverse team environment including interactions with technical staff, operation leaders, and contract personnel.
- Ability to challenge the organization in a manner that maintains trust and respect.
- Ability to build business partnerships across and between functional groups and lead a project or technical team.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:
- 3-5 years in a PSM or RMP regulated environment.
- Functional Safety Certifications (Certified Safety Specialist, Certified Industrial Hygienist), or Six Sigma Green or Black Belt is a plus.
- Knowledge and experience in ISO 14001, ISO 45001, and ISO 50001 compliance preferred. Auditor certification is a plus or willing to work towards an auditing certification.
- Experience in Fire Loss and Prevention activities including involvement with insurance carrier.
- Experience designing and implementing strategies/programs/processes that support a business strategy.
