Job Summary:
The Assistant Engineering Manager - Mechanical will be working in collaboration with the Mechanical Engineering Manager to oversee and coordinate the daily operations of the mechanical engineering staff. This position also provides technical direction and project leadership for manufacturing projects related to relay panels, control buildings, and medium voltage switchgears while ensuring company objectives and goals are met.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- Participates in the hiring and training of the mechanical engineering staff.
- Assists with performance evaluations that are timely and constructive.
- Supervises the efforts of project teams to ensure on time completion of multiple projects.
- Ensures project team members are working in a responsible manner and taking “ownership” for their work.
- Engages in all leadership trainings, meetings, and initiatives.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Collaborates with the Mechanical Engineering Manager to coordinate engineering activities for the department; tracks progress of engineering activities and communicates information as appropriate.
- Leads and coordinates various mechanical engineering functions; including specification reviews, drawing and design reviews, and testing.
- Regularly reviews schedules to ensure deliverables for the engineering department are met within the deadlines given; ensures projects comply with customer specifications, timelines, and budgets.
- Responsible for department budget tracking/monitoring.
- Reviews the work and projects of engineers for technical accuracy.
- Provides engineering support to production departments during all stages of manufacturing.
- Addresses design and manufacturing issues that arise; provide solutions to address issues.
- Mentors the Mechanical Engineers and drafting personals based on the permanent design improvement process.
- Maintains knowledge of new trends, developments, technologies, materials, and best practices; applies this knowledge to continually improve product lines and production efficiency.
- Assists in setting department objectives/KPI’s and reviewing ongoing performance.
- Drives continuous improvement activities in quality, process improvements, and value engineering to enhance the capability of existing processes and remove waste.
- May be assigned as the lead engineer on specific projects.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
- Highly experienced in traditional mechanical design, simulations, design for manufacturing and assembly for mechanical systems such as enclosures for buildings’ equipment or switchgears.
- Competence in 3D solid modelling, proficiency with the latest mechanical CAD tools (e.g., SolidWorks) and the simulation tools required.
- Knowledge of HVAC system analysis and associated calculations
- Experience in structural design and analysis with familiarity with structural FEA
- Familiarity with building codes, ASME, ANSI, and other applicable industry standards and codes.
- Knowledge of manufacturing processes and ability to work well with manufacturing personnel.
- Excellent problem-solving skills, critical thinking skills, troubleshooting skills, and strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Must have proven multitasking skills and can work in fast-paced, high demand environment.
- Must have excellent analytical and computational skills.
- Must have excellent organizational, supervisory, managerial and leadership skills to manage a team of engineers and technical staff.
- Familiarity with ISO policies and safety regulations
- Excellent budgeting and cost containment skills.
- Ability to gather, analyze and summarize data in order to draw rational, fact-based conclusions
- Demonstrate commitment to continuous improvement
Experience/Education:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering; Master’s Degree preferred.
- Minimum 7 years’ experience in Mechanical Design
- Minimum 4 years’ Managerial experience and/or proven leadership skills
- Knowledge of coding and standards associated with the Electrical Industry
- Professional Engineer certification is a plus.
Physical Requirements:
- Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
- Must be able to traverse the production floor as needed.
Salary : $120,000 - $140,000
