Normal Work Hours and Days: 12 Hour Days, 7 days a week for up to 8 weeks at a time. Work is on a seasonal basis.

Summary:
Responsible for the safe operation of an assigned vessel and crew, commands vessel into and out of harbors, estuaries, straits, sounds, rivers, lakes and bays.
Essential Functions:
- Adhere to the QSEMS (Quality, Safety, and Environmental Management System) including the Quality Assurance Manual (QAM) and the Operating Procedures Manual (OPM).
- Implement the Quality, Safety and Environmental Policy of the Company.
- Provide overriding authority and make decisions with respect to quality, safety and pollution prevention.
- Request the Company’s assistance as may be necessary.
- Provide overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of assigned vessel and crew.
- Determine the need for and assign lookouts as necessary.
- Signal workers on deck during operations when necessary.
- Determine course and towing speed on basis of specialized knowledge of local winds, weather, tides, and current.
- Steer vessels to avoid reefs, outlying shoals, and other hazards to shipping, utilizing navigation devices, such as: radar, sonic depth finder, compass and sextant; and, aids to navigation, such as: lighthouses and buoys.
- Stands wheelhouse watches underway.
- Ensure compliance of assigned operations with applicable federal, state, and company regulations and policies.
- Prepare, monitor, and update vessel work lists and maintenance schedules.
- Perform administrative and supervisory functions.
- Purchase food for crew.
- Prepare material requisitions and monitor usage of supplies.
Other Tasks:

Supervisory Responsibilities:
- Mentor and provide onboard training for employees.
- Reward and discipline employees.
- Address complaints and resolve problems.
- Motivate the crew in observation of the policy.
- Issue appropriate orders and instructions in a clear and simple manner
- Verify that specified requirements are observed.
- Routinely review the Company’s QSEMS and reports any deficiencies to shore-based management.
Qualifications:

Education and/or Experience:
Minimum:
- Merchant Mariner Credential
- Master of Towing (Near Coastal)
- Radar Observer Unlimited
- TWIC
- Valid Driver License
- Experience as Master of a Towing Vessel
- Alaska Towing experience, including Western Alaska Rivers and Arctic regions
Preferred:
- First Aid/CPR
- Vessel Security Officer (VSO) Certificate
Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
- Knowledge and understand of Alaska weather, tides and currents.
- Knowledge and understanding of all towing methods.
- Able to operate vessels in close quarter situations.
- Knowledge of and ability to use Internet software and the ability to use Microsoft Office and email
- Knowledge of principles and methods for transportation of goods.
- Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair and maintenance.
- Skill in controlling operations of equipment and systems on the vessel.
- Skill in problem solving and reacting quickly with rapidly changing situations.
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
- Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers and the general public.
