The Office of Engagement and Extension (OEE) was organized in 2006 to advance CSU’s engagement and outreach missions. OEE includes CSU Extension, CSU Extended Campus (including CSU Online), the Colorado Water Center and a variety of vibrant programs that engage the teaching, research, extension, and service missions of Colorado State University. The Vice President for Engagement and Extension (VPEE) is the principal administrative, academic, and fiscal officer for the division, reports to the CSU President, and works closely with the Provost/Executive Vice President. OEE works collaboratively across all Colleges and offices on campus, and has strong engagement programs throughout Colorado, the Western US and globally. At any given time, OEE includes over 400 employees. The total of budgets is approximately $85 million. OEE is one of the most institutionally comprehensive commitments to engagement and outreach among all land-grant and other universities. Propelled by OEE’s leadership, nationally CSU is a Carnegie Engaged University (2008, 2014), is a member of the Engagement Scholarship Consortium, is an APLU Innovation and Economic Prosperity University (2016) and is highly ranked for its online degree programs. Annually, CSU Extended Campus garners enrollments of over 10,000 learners and CSU Extension delivers approximately 500,000 educational contacts.

The City and County of Broomfield became Colorado’s 64th county in 2001 and is home to 76,860 residents. Situated in the north metro area between Denver and Boulder, the community is planned with a balance of residential and commercial land use, with generous open space, parks, and natural areas. The 34 square mile county boasts over 8,000 acres of private and public open lands, a multimodal transportation network, and a broad employer base including retail, manufacturing, and tech and communication companies.

The Broomfield CSU Extension team is housed in the Broomfield Library, Arts, History and CSU Extension Department, and collaborates with a wide range of government and community partners in delivering educational programs and services. The current staff consists of the Extension director/horticulture specialist, a part-time administrative support position, and the volunteer coordinator.

Position Summary

This position will oversee the administration of CSU Extension volunteer programs in Broomfield, and coordinate volunteers to provide non-credit educational programming for youth and adult audiences, based on community needs. Duties include volunteer recruitment, training, retention and coordination; support for volunteer activities that engage the public; program marketing; program activity tracking and reporting; volunteer recognition; documentation and reporting of program accomplishments. The primary volunteer program for CSU Extension in Broomfield is the Colorado Master Gardener (CMG) program. CMG volunteers carry out a range of community outreach and education activities including teaching gardens, community classes and home gardener consultations. The Broomfield and Adams County CMG programs operate jointly. This position leads the administration of the CMG programs in both counties and works closely with a counterpart in Adams County to support volunteer activities and needs. There are currently 50 CMG volunteers in Broomfield and 114 in the two counties. For more information on the Colorado Master Gardener program visit cmg.extension.colostate.edu.

CSU Extension in Broomfield is seeking to expand the reach and impact of its volunteer programs in the areas of natural resources and conservation in the future. This position may help pilot new volunteer programs in these areas which could include Native Plant Masters, Master Naturalists, others.

The individual in this position works as a member of the local county Extension team, as a local representative of Colorado State University, and as a regional collaborator. This individual works under the guidance and supervision of the Broomfield County Extension Director. This position will work closely with many volunteers, colleagues and partners. The typical schedule is Monday – Thursday; some night and weekend work is required (can be scheduled in advance).

Required Job Qualifications

  • Completed bachelor’s degree.
  • Two or more years of experience or training relevant to volunteer management.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license or access to a licensed driver by the employment start date.
  • The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the United States by the proposed start date; Extension will not sponsor a visa for this position.

Preferred Job Qualifications

  • Strong organizational skills and time management; demonstrated success coordinating and prioritizing multiple events/projects and tasks with concurrent deadlines.
  • Ability to communicate through teaching, public speaking/presentation and writing as demonstrated through application materials and experience.
  • Demonstrated experience working with people as individuals and in groups; ability to forge equitable and successful partnerships with other professionals and organizations.
  • Commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion in program efforts.
  • Demonstrated use of technology in planning, marketing, and managing volunteer or educational programs.
  • Experience or knowledge in horticulture, natural resources, or a closely related field.
  • Experience in audience needs identification, educational program delivery, and program evaluation.
  • Completed master’s degree.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish.

  • Maintain, strengthen and grow existing Extension volunteer programs by coordinating the following activities – recruiting, interviewing, selecting, training, deploying and recognizing volunteers; establishing project teams and coordinating volunteer project managers; tracking hours, monitoring and redirecting project implementation as needed.
  • Help the public gain answers to horticulture and program related questions through volunteers and use of evidence-based resources.
  • Instill quality customer service skills and diagnostic protocols in volunteers.
  • Provide guidance and support for volunteers and volunteer projects in the community.
  • Maintain and develop local program processes that follow state program guidelines and enhance the experience of volunteers, staff and community members.
  • Educate, manage, and support volunteers in the use of an online volunteer management system that includes electronic scheduling and tracking; maintain email contact lists and databases; create summary reports.
  • Provide proactive and responsive continuing education opportunities for volunteers to address knowledge gaps and provide enrichment opportunities.

  • Collect and report program activity data to CSU and county.
  • Assist in developing, delivering, and evaluating research based educational programming and information for the public using a variety of educational venues.
  • Help develop and promote culturally appropriate programming that is inclusive of youth and adult audiences that are diverse and/or underserved.
  • Actively participate in CSU Extension statewide and regional work groups relevant to program area; help shape and implement local, regional, or statewide program efforts as appropriate.
  • Work with supervisor to develop individual plan of work and contribute to local program goals.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities as appropriate or required by the position.
  • Collect and report data, stories, pictures and marketing to include in publications, websites, social media, etc. for CSU and Broomfield County.
  • Assist with updating and maintaining Broomfield CSU Extension website and social media platforms with relevant program related content and information.
