The Department of Biomedical Sciences (BMS) in the College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences (CVMBS) is a major locus for biomedical education including undergraduate, graduate, veterinary and post-doctoral training and for translational biomedical research at Colorado State University. BMS houses more than 30 research laboratories. Faculty members’ interests run the gamut from human and animal anatomy and neuroanatomy, reproductive biology and endocrinology to molecular neuroscience and cardiovascular physiology.

Position Summary

The Tesfaye lab in the Department of Biomedical Sciences and at the Animal Reproduction and Biotechnology Laboratory (ARBL) is seeking a postdoctoral fellow. The postdoctoral fellow will conduct research on modulation of embryo’s response to environmental stress with the aim to enhance development and viability. This includes the use of antioxidants specifically activating the NRF2-mediated oxidative stress response pathway and CRISPR-cas-9 mediated knockout of the pathway inhibitor. The project involves the design and construction of CRISPR plasmids, microinjection or electroporation of embryos, RNA isolation and large-scale transcriptome and epigenome analysis, basic bioinformatics analysis, basic molecular biology techniques including PCR, qPCR, immunoblotting, immunofluorescent staining of cells and embryos. Moreover, the position involves designing and executing experiments, analyzing and interpretation of results and preparation of manuscripts for publication.

A valid driver’s license is required for this position (or ability to obtain a valid driver’s license by the start date). This position will be exposed to slaughter house conditions to obtain research materials. Working occasional after hours or weekends is expected.

Required Job Qualifications

  • PhD in Animal Sciences, Biomedical Sciences, Reproductive Biology or related field by time of appointment
  • Experience with mammalian reproduction research
  • Established publication record in peer-reviewed journals
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to carry out statistical analysis
  • Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license or access to a licensed driver by the employment start date.

Preferred Job Qualifications

  • Experience with primary culture of follicular cells
  • RNA or DNA isolation and downstream analysis experience
  • Experience or familiarity with bioinformatics software and analysis
  • Experience with CRISPR, gene editing, cell culture techniques, and in vitro embryo production

  • The postdoctoral fellow will focus on multiple projects on of CRISPR gene editing in embryos, and performing molecular techniques (PCR, qPCR, immunoblotting and immunofluorescent staining).
  • The fellow will be involved in grant and manuscript preparation.
