The California State University, Dominguez Hills Toro Auxiliary Partners (CSUDH TAP) is a non-profit organization and was incorporated in 1968 as a partner of California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH) to provide supplemental services that enhance core academic programs that are an integral part of the University’s educational mission. CSUDH is a highly diverse, metropolitan university primarily serving the South Bay area of Los Angeles County. CSUDH is one of 23 campuses that comprise the California State University system.

Position Summary:

Under the general supervision of the Executive Director of the Office of Educational Partnerships at CSUDH, the First Year Student Success Coordinator will design and deliver programs and services to support first-year students transitioning to CSUDH from partner GEAR UP and TRIO programs. The Coordinator will act as a key resource for students, offering retention services such as personal, academic, financial, and success counseling. Additionally, the role includes developing and managing activities for the "Summer Bridge" program.

The Coordinator will take full responsibility for assisting students in overcoming challenges that hinder their academic success. Building strong partnerships with the Office of First- and Second-Year Experience, the Educational Opportunity Program, Student Support Services, and Student Success Centers across all academic colleges, the Coordinator will actively contribute to the university’s "Go Far Together" strategic plan.

The ideal candidate will be self-driven, capable of working independently, and adept at forming collaborative relationships with campus support services and other resources to enhance student success.

This position is full-time, benefited, non-exempt, and in-person—temporary grant funded through September 2025.

Hourly rate: $26.00

 Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Orientation and Transition Programs: Plan and execute first-year orientation programs, including workshops and events focused on academic skills, time management, campus resources, and social integration.
  • Student Mentoring and Advising: Provide one-on-one and group advising for first-year students, addressing academic challenges, personal issues, and setting goals to foster success and retention. Act as a referral specialist, connecting students with the appropriate campus resources to resolve various needs. Provide guidance on financial literacy and post-secondary financial planning. Develop or source proactive mental and emotional wellness resources to help students navigate personal and emotional challenges that may impact their academic performance.
  1. Academic Support Services: Collaborate with academic departments to ensure first-year students have access to tutoring, academic coaching, and other support services designed to enhance student performance.
  1. Campus Engagement: Coordinate and promote campus involvement opportunities for first-year students, including student organizations, leadership programs, and community service. Participate in designated Campus and OEP work groups and/or campus committees as determined by the OEP Executive Director.
  1. Data Collection and Assessment: Collect and analyze data on first-year student performance, retention, and satisfaction to assess program effectiveness and use the data to produce an end-of-year report on student experience and academic performance.
  1. Early Alert Systems: Monitor and respond to early alerts for at-risk students, intervening with appropriate resources to help students overcome academic or personal difficulties. Meet at least once a semester with each identified student to provide appropriate academic and personal support.
  1. Workshops and Programming: Develop implement comprehensive activities that facilitate retention and student success. Workshops, guest speakers and other retention activities to systematically counsel and motivate students’ retention.
  1. Collaboration: Work closely Establish collaborative working relationships with Educational Opportunity Program, Student Support Services, Office of First- and Second-Year Experience, Student Success Centers, Career Center, Counseling and Psychological Services, Financial Aid, Student Life and ASI other campus resources that support student development and success.

Minimum Qualifications and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, counseling, student affairs, or a related field (Master’s preferred)
  • Experience with first-year seminar or academic support programs
  • Experience working in higher education, particularly in student support roles
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills
  • Ability to work with diverse student populations and foster an inclusive environment
  • Experience with program planning, coordination, and assessment
  • Knowledge of student development theory and retention strategies
  • Facilitating groups and workshops that support student success.
  • Experience working in a university environment advising students in individual and group settings.
  • Experience building meaningful collaborative working relationships campus partners.
  • Commitment to social justice and equity in education.

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Ability to successfully facilitate large group discussion/presentations.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate in writing and orally.
  • Ability to work independently, set timelines and work plans.
  • Knowledge of computer applications and technology related to educational advising functions.
  • Knowledge of California State University admission and course pattern requirements

Sensitive positions are those requiring heightened scrutiny of individuals holding the position based on potential for harm to children. Concerns for the safety and security of people, animals, or property, or heightened risk for financial loss to the CSUDH TAP or individuals in the university community. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the application status of applicants or continued employment of current employees.

Employees at the CSUDH TAP at will basis and can be terminated by either an employee or the Foundation at any time with or without case or advanced notice. Permanent status can neither be obtained nor granted.
