Job Summary:
The Child Nutrition Director is responsible for overseeing the planning, implementation, and management of the school nutrition program in compliance with state and federal regulations. This position ensures that students receive healthy, nutritious, and appealing meals while maintaining financial and operational efficiency. The director will collaborate with school leadership, vendors, and regulatory agencies to promote student wellness and ensure program success.
Key Responsibilities:
- Program Management & Compliance:
- Oversee daily operations of the Child Nutrition Program, ensuring compliance with Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA) and USDA regulations.
- Develop and implement policies and procedures to ensure food safety, sanitation, and compliance with health codes.
- Maintain accurate records, including meal counts, inventory, procurement, and financial reports.
- Financial Oversight & Budgeting:
- Prepare and manage the annual budget for the nutrition program, ensuring financial sustainability.
- Monitor revenue and expenses, including state and federal reimbursements, to maintain fiscal accountability.
- Seek grants and funding opportunities to support and enhance the child nutrition program.
- Menu Planning & Nutrition Standards:
- Develop nutritious, appealing, and culturally appropriate meal plans that meet federal and state dietary guidelines.
- Work with dietitians and food service staff to ensure balanced meal options for students, including those with dietary restrictions.
- Implement farm-to-school and wellness initiatives to encourage healthy eating habits.
- Staff Leadership & Training:
- Recruit, train, and supervise food service staff to maintain high standards of performance and professionalism.
- Conduct ongoing training for staff on food safety, customer service, and compliance with regulations.
- Foster a positive and efficient work environment within the child nutrition team.
- Procurement & Vendor Management:
- Oversee purchasing and procurement of food, supplies, and equipment in accordance with state and federal guidelines.
- Manage contracts and relationships with food vendors and suppliers to ensure cost-effective and high-quality service.
- Community Engagement & Program Promotion:
- Serve as a liaison between the school, parents, and community stakeholders to promote the importance of child nutrition.
- Develop outreach programs and educational initiatives to support student health and wellness.
- Address concerns from parents and staff regarding meal programs, special diets, and food allergies.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Nutrition, Food Service Management, Business Administration, or a related field preferred.
- Minimum of two (2) years of experience in school nutrition, food service management, or a related field.
- Knowledge of USDA and TDA Child Nutrition Program regulations and guidelines.
- Strong leadership, organizational, and financial management skills.
- Experience in menu planning, food safety, and procurement.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and nutrition program software.
- ServSafe certification or ability to obtain within 90 days of employment.
- Ability to communicate effectively with staff, students, parents, and community stakeholders.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in Nutrition, Business Administration, or a related field.
- Registered Dietitian (RD) or School Nutrition Specialist (SNS) certification.
- Experience in a public charter school setting.
Physical Requirements & Work Environment:
- Ability to stand, walk, and perform job duties for extended periods.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
- Work is performed in a kitchen, office, and school environment with exposure to hot and cold temperatures.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $35,000.00 - $45,000.00 per year
