Join the Cumberland County Board of Elections and play a role in ensuring fair, honest, and efficient elections! As an important member of our team, you'll be responsible for maintaining and updating over 300 electronic poll books, 90 optical scan voting machines, and 80 Ballot Marking Devices across 77 precincts and up to 12 early voting sites. Your work will involve setting up election races, verifying voting machines for accuracy, and conducting thorough testing to ensure every vote is counted correctly. If you’re detail-oriented and passionate about ensuring accuracy, this is an opportunity to make a direct impact on the integrity of our elections.

  • Ensure that all voting equipment is fully functional and compliant before election day by testing and certifying each piece of voting equipment, creating and executing test ballot decks for logic and accuracy on devices like the DS200 voting machine and coordinating repairs with vendors
  • Preparing thumb drives for voting machines, uploading election data on election night from all precincts and early voting sites and uploading results to the State Board of Elections
  • Develop spreadsheets to track test results, ensuring each precinct’s machines are correctly configured to process the designated ballots
  • Configuring and managing early voting sites and Election Day operations
  • Driving to and setting up the SOSA system at early voting locations, configuring computers and network connectivity, and troubleshooting any IT issues that arise
  • Install and convert SOSA Voting systems for Election Day use, assign equipment to precincts, issue voting machines to poll workers, and provide training to Election Day rovers, precinct officials, and part-time personnel on equipment setup and troubleshooting
Graduation from an accredited two-year college or technical school with a degree in computer science, information technology or related field and three (3) years of experience that includes PC hardware/software support involving installation, repair, maintenance, and/or training; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.  

Necessary additional requirements:

Successful completion of Keyboarding, Data Entry, Customer Service, Basic Excel, and Basic Word tests will be required. Candidates selected as qualified will be contacted via email by a Human Resource representative for testing.

  • Knowledge of Federal, State, and County laws, policies, and procedures pertaining to the essential duties of the position
  • Knowledge of system development methods used for the development of new systems and enhancements to existing information systems
  • Knowledge of advanced concepts and basic operating principles of data communication and information systems hardware and software
  •  Knowledge of system development methods used for the development of new telecommunication systems
  • Knowledge of contemporary and generative programming languages and techniques.  
  • Skills to be able to communicate effectively
  • Skills to establish and maintain effective working relationships
  • Ability to gather and analyze facts, draw conclusions, define problems and suggest solutions
  • Ability to adapt, integrate, and modify existing programs or vendor supplied packaged programs for use with existing information systems
  • Ability to conduct training and informational sessions

Driving is an essential function of this position. To be considered, you must have a valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record. If your driver's license is from another state, you will be required to obtain and show proof of a valid NC driver's license within 60 days of hire.

Successful candidates who receive a conditional offer of employment with Cumberland County must pass pre-employment screenings per General Statute 163-37.1. to include criminal history checks, fingerprinting, and drug screenings prior to beginning work or receiving a final offer of employment. Refusal to submit to testing or testing positive for prohibited substances will result in the withdrawal of the conditional employment offer.
