Position Description
The Child Life Specialist is responsible for providing comprehensive Child Life services to minimize the negative impact of healthcare experiences and illness by addressing the emotional, cognitive, and developmental needs of patients and families. The specialist plans and provides therapeutic interventions and appropriate psychosocial developmental care for pediatric patients and their families, assists them in coping with the stress and anxiety of healthcare experiences, and maximizes the growth and development of infants, children, and adolescent patients. This is an hourly, non-exempt position.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities

Shift Schedule: Full and part-time opportunities available.
Part-time: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Wednesday, Thursday, Friday 8:00AM to 3:30PM
Full-time: Monday-Friday 8:00AM to 4:30PM

Position Description

The specialist plans and provides therapeutic interventions and appropriate psychosocial developmental care for pediatric patients and their families, assists them in coping with the stress and anxiety of healthcare experiences, and maximizes the growth and development of infants, children, and adolescent patients. This is an hourly, non-exempt position.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
- Engages pediatric patients and families in developmentally appropriate activities to support coping and compliance during treatment and provides diversional activities in clinic based on individual capabilities and needs.
- Assesses and documents patient's developmental level, emotional state, understanding of hospitalization and procedures using informal and/or formal assessment techniques.
- Provides age-appropriate therapeutic interventions to promote self-healing, self-expression, understanding and mastery, and increase cooperation during tests and procedures.
- Prepares patients and families for procedure/treatment(s) using developmentally appropriate explanations and provides education and information to enhance parental understanding of health care system and resources.
- Documents clinical services in the electronic medical record, when appropriate.
- Provides interdisciplinary in-service education to staff on growth and development, Child Life, and the impact of illness, injury, and healthcare on patients and their families.
- Manages Child Life materials by assuming responsibility for cleanliness and storage.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Bachelor’s degree in Child Life, Psychology, Child Development, Special Education or related field.
- Child Life Certification from the Child Life Certifying Commission within the Child Life Council, Inc.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in Child Life after internship.
- Basic Life support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association.
- Master’s degree.
- Hematology-Oncology experience.
- Thorough knowledge of Child Life Assessment techniques.
- Effective verbal and written communications skills.
- Frequently required to walk, reach, bend, grasp, push/pull and lift up to 10 pounds.
- Frequently required to utilize visual acuity to operate office equipment and read printed materials.
- Frequently required to hear and speak against background noise and conversations.
- Frequently required to handle several face-to-face contacts daily.
