What are the responsibilities and job description for the Curator of Contemporary Art position at Currier Museum of Art?
Description
The Currier Museum of Art seeks a curator to lead its contemporary program of artists-in-residence, exhibitions, acquisitions, and community engagement. The museum has a strong residency program, with a home for visiting artists across the street from the museum, as a means of creating a depth of understanding with a range of audiences. Artists are chosen by invitation and through an annual open call. The museum acquires significant works produced by visiting artists, commissioned works, and builds its collection of 20th-century and contemporary art. A special fund supports public projects in the neighboring city of Nashua.
This position requires creative thinking, experience working with artists, familiarity with contemporary collectors, dealers, foundations, and events, a commitment to co-curation, and a collaborative approach to the historic collection.
The Curator of Contemporary Art will:
- be actively engaged with emerging and established artists from around the world – to recruit artists-in-residence, commission new work, and collect.
- be highly collaborative and work effectively with the museum’s educators who focus on community wellness (families impacted by opioid addiction, veterans' and their families, people with memory loss, physically and cognitively challenged individuals, teens suffering with anxiety, and refugees and immigrants).
- work collaboratively to link the historical collection with artists and the contemporary collection, and to activate the architectural holdings of the museum – two Frank Lloyd Wright residences and a 19th-century mansion.
The Currier Museum is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
The Currier welcomes and encourages candidates from Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC), as well as members of the LGBTQIA community. The museum does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, national origin, genetics, disability, age, or veteran status.
