JOB SUMMARY:
This position requires a strong technical background. This person will support the design of large-scale capital projects for Curtin Maritime. The successful applicant will have experience designing mechanical, electrical and piping systems in CAD. AutoCAD experience is required. Rhinoceros 3D experience is desired.
This is a work-from-home position with periodic travel to job sites located in the contiguous United States A TWIC card and unrestricted travel in the US are necessary. This position requires the ability to climb ladders and maneuver in tight spaces. The responsibilities include working in shipyards and onboard vessels for the purpose of inspection, troubleshooting, and to observe and perform tests and trials.
The successful applicant will perform design engineering activities under the supervision of the Project Manager of Capital Builds. A 4-year degree in mechanical engineering is required; marine design experience and a professional engineer certificate is preferred. One to three years or more of relevant work experience is required.
RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES:
Mechanical Design Engineer
- Develop and review mechanical and piping system diagrams.
- Create or review calculations.
- Solicit technical information and quotes from vendors or suppliers.
- Call vendors, clients, contractors and others to check on progress or share information.
- Tabulate, review, and select best value options from bids and quotes.
- Write and review technical specifications.
- Develop testing criteria for successful system installations.
- Correspond with regulatory bodies such as United States Coast Guard (USCG) and American Bureau of Shipping (ABS).
- Verify installation of systems at shipyards.
- Develop templates and project standards.
- Automate redundant tasks and activities such as creating templates and forms.
- Other such activities as assigned to the Capital Builds Team.
SKILLS, APTITUDES, QUALIFICATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS:
Mental Aptitudes Required:
- A four-year degree in Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent experience.
- One (1) to three (3) years or more of relevant work experience.
- Experience designing mechanical, piping, hydraulic, and electrical systems.
- Ability to communicate clearly and concisely.
- Good electronic file organizational skills.
- Excellent problem-solving skills.
- Self-starter who can anticipate future assignments and prepare for them.
- Ability to juggle multiple assignments with demanding schedules.
- A positive outlook, professional demeanor, and adaptive personality.
- Knowledge and Experience with ABS/DNV Class Society Rules are desirable.
Physical Aptitudes Required:
- Ability to climb ladders, pass through structural access hatches, and maneuver in tight spaces.
- Must be able to visually inspect structural, mechanical, piping, and electrical system installations.
- Operate electronic equipment such as cameras, laptop computers, and test equipment during the course of inspections, troubleshooting, and site visits.
- Ability to enter construction areas and machinery spaces while wearing required personal protective equipment (PPE) which may include: respirators or masks, safety goggles, ear plugs, steel toed shoes, protective coveralls, lifejackets, or other items as required by the specific situation.
