Description
This position is in a busy Emergency Department that sees between 150 to 180 patients daily.
The department includes 33 main beds, 8 trauma/resuscitation beds, and a pod with 4 Behavioral Health rooms that can be converted for medical use.
The staff utilizes vertical care areas for waiting room/holding area or to manage ESI 3 and ESI 4 patients, or as additional pods based on patient flow.
The role involves caring for neonates to geriatric patients, from minor to critical cases, including sepsis, DKA, respiratory illness, major trauma, stroke, and cardiac emergencies.
The department is a Level 2 trauma center, so there is a heavy trauma population particularly during summer months.
The position requires participation in the rotation to treat and assist Sexual Assault patients, which includes evidence collection and interviewing victims while following established protocols.
The RN must be able to prioritize care appropriately and demonstrate critical thinking skills.
Patient ratios are typically 1:4-5 for RNs.
Required skills include experience with the patient types mentioned, performing ESI assessments during triage, and the ability to care for all levels of patients with good communication and willingness to ask questions.
There is support from ED techs, charge nurses, physicians, NP coverage, and other resources.
Charting is done through EPIC, and familiarity with this system is preferred.
The orientation includes 8 hours of facility orientation, 4 hours of department-specific training, and a minimum of 24 to 36 hours of shifts on the floor, based on weekly contracted hours.
The schedule includes various shift times, and travelers are utilized to fill staffing gaps across the schedule.
Holiday work may be required based on department needs.
