Purpose Statement
The job of Safety Officer serves the purpose of providing support to the instructional process with specific responsibilities for the safety and welfare of students during classroom and non-classroom activities; minimizing the frequency and/or severity of harmful incidents; and communicating observations and/or incidents that have a potential impact on the general well-being of students, school personnel, and/or visitors. Work hours will be Saturdays, Sundays and some weekdays.
Essential Functions
- Communicates safety and security policies and enforcement procedures to students, staff, and visitors for the purpose of ensuring their understanding of such information.
- Responds to a variety of situations (e.g., accidents, injuries, vandalism, suspicious activities, alarms, etc.) for the purpose of taking the appropriate action to resolve immediate safety and/or security concerns.
- Collaborates with other school and Central Office personnel, assigned School Resource Officer(s), representatives of local agencies, etc. for the purpose of providing information and/or taking action regarding investigations, criminal activities, gang activities, vandalism, etc. for the safety and security of all school properties and personnel.
- Prepares written materials (e.g. incident reports, activity logs, etc.) to convey information clearly, for documentation, and for future reference in inquiries and investigations.
- Intervenes in potential conflicts and emergency situations for the purpose of minimizing disruptions of campus activities and/or injury to involved parties.
- Actively patrols school properties (e.g., grounds, roads, buildings, adjacent areas, parking lots, arms/disarms buildings, searches, etc.) for the purpose of providing visibility, maintaining security, and deterring criminal activities.
- Adheres to norms for appearance of all uniformed personnel in required professional attire provided by Da Vinci Schools while on duty at any school functions on and off site only.
- Participates in unit meetings, in-service trainings, and ongoing professional development to remain current in the performance of the job.
- Provides traffic and parking control for the purpose of maintaining efficient traffic flow and use of school properties.
- Maintains job related safety and security equipment to ensure it is in safe, working condition ready for use when needed.
- Other related job duties as assigned.
Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications
SKILLS are required to perform multiple tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include administering first aid; operating standard office equipment and using pertinent software applications; preparing and maintaining accurate records; adhering to safety practices and procedures; critical observation; enforcing discipline policies; enforcing rules and regulations; handling hazardous materials; investigating problems; and utilizing appropriate physical and mechanical restraint.
KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math, read a variety of manuals, write documents following prescribed formats, present information to others, and analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions. Specific knowledge-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include methods of investigation; recordkeeping; cultural differences within the student population; job-related codes, laws, rules, regulations, and policies; chain of custody of confiscated items including contraband; community resources; and best practices to ensure school safety and security.
ABILITY is required to work with specific, job-related data; utilize and maintain a variety of job-related equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others in a wide variety of circumstances and work with data utilizing specific, defined processes. Problem-solving is required to identify issues and create action plans; independently interpreting data to establish effective protocols. Specific ability-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include adapting to changing work priorities; maintaining confidentiality; diffusing argumentative behavior; and working some evenings and weekends.
Responsibility
Responsibilities include working under direct supervision following standardized practices and/or methods; maintaining a professional environment around students, staff and visitors; and operating within a defined budget. Utilization of some resources from other work units may be required to perform the job’s functions.
Working Environment
The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions require the following physical demands: occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling up to 75 pounds of force; some climbing and balancing; some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires sitting, walking, and standing. The job is performed under some temperature extremes (e.g., hot, cold, wet, humid, or windy) and under conditions with exposure to risk of injury and/or illness and requires the ability to climb up and down stairs of two or more floors on a regular basis. Work hours will be Saturdays, Sundays and some weekdays.
Experience
Any combination of experience and training working with youth and adolescents that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is appropriate.
Education
High school diploma or equivalent.
Equivalency
Targeted job-related education with study in a job-related area.
