POSITION SUMMARY
Under the direction of the Dickinson Site Coordinator and in cooperation with other Dakota Center for Independent Living (DCIL) leadership, the Independent Living Advocate will carry out duties, as assigned, in support of DCIL’s mission and vision and consistent with the Independent Living Philosophy throughout an 18-county service area.
The person filling this part-time position is responsible for providing information and referral, individual/systems advocacy training, Independent Living skills training to individuals with disabilities, and planning social recreational opportunities for the center’s consumers.
An Independent Living Advocate is responsible for interacting with various community agencies and or organizations to engage in systems advocacy to effect positive change for people with disabilities.
The person filling this position must be able to assist consumers in developing their independent living goals, maintain up to date consumer service records and coordinate follow-up service plans with consumers when they exit the program, if appropriate.
The Independent Living Advocate will provide outreach services and educational presentations to area agencies, schools and other community events within the service delivery area.
RESPONSIBLITIES
Provide exceptional person-centered planning services to consumers and the community, meeting people where they are at, in a manner consistent with the Independent Living (IL) Philosophy. Demonstrate a strong commitment to DCIL’s mission and values and adherence with DCIL’s policy and procedures. Contribute to a positive working environment by displaying a readiness to help others and a willingness to do what needs to be done with fidelity and attention to detail.
SUPERVISORY RELATIONSHIPS
Reports to the Dickinson Site Coordinator.
SUPERVISORY AUTHORITY
No supervisory authority.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
1. Promote and uphold the Independent Living Philosophy.
2. Become familiar with all aspects of DCIL’s service programs.
3. Maintain up-to-date expertise on disability rights, regulations, and policies relevant to people with disabilities and advocates, as appropriate.
4. Provide individual services to people with disabilities throughout DCIL’s 18-county service area.
5. Provide community services throughout DCIL’s 18-county service area.
6. Provide DCIL services in a person-centered manner consistent with the Independent Living Philosophy.
7. Determine eligibility based on residential county and disability.
8. Review consumer rights and responsibilities, grievance procedure, and Client Assistance Program (CAP) with consumers.
9. Support consumers in developing and achieving independent living goals.
10. Perform accessibility surveys, as assigned.
11. Contribute to newsletter and consumer calendar development.
12. Serve on boards, committees, councils, commissions, and other groups, as assigned.
13. Develop and maintain appropriate collaborative working relationships with other organizations and agencies.
14. Provide fee-for-service and other programming or services, as directed.
15. Participate in the planning and execution of DCIL projects and other activities, as assigned.
16. Travel, as required.
17. Maintain a working knowledge of Microsoft products, social media, and web-based search engines and information sharing sites.
18. Document all services provided in the Center’s database.
19. Participate in the planning and development of DCIL’s annual workplan.
20. Know and adhere to all DCIL policies and procedures.
21. Maintain a professional demeanor, at all times.
22. Maintain confidentiality, at all times.
23. Accurately complete DCIL Request Forms in a timely manner.
24. Accurately complete Timesheets in a timely manner.
25. Accurately complete Expense Sheets in a timely manner.
26. Participate in supervisory meetings.
27. Participate in staff meetings.
28. Participate in in-service and professional development trainings.
29. Participate in annual Performance Evaluation.
30. Other job duties, as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
1. Experience in the human services field is preferred.
2. Exceptional interpersonal communication skills.
3. Experience working with individuals with disabilities.
4. Experience collaborating with local, state, and federal agencies and organizations.

4. Duties will be performed in a variety of settings such as in the office, community, and consumer homes, and throughout the service area.

6. Must be able to lift or transfer a minimum of 50 pounds.
7. Frequently required to sit, stand, walk, reach with arms and hands, climb/balance, stoop, kneel or crouch.
8. Travel is required.
9. Occasional work outside of core business hours will be required.
