As an Optician for Dakota Eye, you will be responsible for the smooth operation of the optical department by providing efficient optical skills to patients for their eyewear and eyecare. These skills and knowledge can be developed through on-the-job training.
Additionally, the person that fills this role will be trained to support Reception and Technician departments as a secondary role.
Optician – Primary Role
- Educates patients on eyewear needs including knowledge of frame fit, lens portfolio, material types, wear, and care of glasses, etc.
- Styles, measures, adjusts, sells, and dispenses eyewear. This includes the ability to properly recommend frames and lenses, take pupillary distance, take proper seg heights, and perform basic adjustments and repairs including assembling a rimless frame.
- Accurately orders eyewear including the use of VisionWeb, the online VSP portal, the Classic website, and filling out paperwork for VSP and Classic order that require it.
- Checks and verifies accuracy of jobs from the previous day
- Knowledge of vision discount plans. This includes the ability to properly interpret and price a VSP order.
- Notifies patients of eyewear progress / arrival both through text messaging and / or phone calls. Also, the ability to contact the lab on job status, lab errors, and optician errors.
- Ability to use essential programs such as Compulink and ModMed. This includes inputting demographic information, understanding and use of Compulink ledger including inputting discounts, processing glasses orders, etc.
- Ability to answer phone calls, properly collect money, accurately reconcile daily reports, and track prescriptions and frames through contacting the labs or frame vendors.
- Sets annual performance goals along with the ability to achieve minimum sales expectations.
- Awareness and adherence to company policies and procedures.
- Assists with cleaning of the Linton clinic
Contact Lens– Primary Role
- Comprehends OD’s chart notes and how they may relate to contact lens wear.
- Ability to troubleshoot patient problems with contacts. This includes reading chart notes, asking appropriate questions, and discussing next steps with the OD.
- Educates patients on contact lenses, the advantages and disadvantages to wear schedules, and potential problems with abuse of contact lenses.
- Checks and verifies backorder issues and either contacts patients who’s lenses have a backorder issue.
- Keep on top of ordering products for the contact lens department that includes solution, cases, trial lenses, plungers, any other scleral lens supplies etc.
Reception – Secondary/Backup Role
- Patient Check-In/Check-out
- Checks patients in, greeting everyone in a pleasant and professional manner
- Tracks patients in the reception area and communicate with them, as needed
- Evaluates chart data to verify all information has been received, completed, and signatures obtained
- Scans patient’s insurance card into the system and ensures insurance information is accurate
- Ensures that proper authorization or referral is collected from the patient
- Assists patients in obtaining authorization or referrals that have not been received by the practice
- Enters all new patient demographic information into the computer
- Marks arrival time of patient in office and makes sure the patient is seen on time.
- Collects and inputs co-pays, refraction fees and any other known, non-covered or outstanding charges.
- Maintains the cash drawer; responsible for payments received at the front desk.
- Completes opening and closing procedures as scheduled
- Administrative
- Places telephone calls to no-show appointments; reschedules as needed
- Ensures reception waiting areas are kept tidy and clean at all times.
- Performs other duties as required
Technician – Secondary/Backup Role
- Acquaints new patients with office procedures to which they will be exposed.
- Obtains patient history to include chief complaint, history of present illness, past history (ocular and general), family history (ocular and general), and history of allergies and medications,
- Performs accurate and consistent documentation and measurement tasks as ordered by the physician
- Informs patients of purpose of tests the technician is performing, and how the patient will be affected during the tests.
- Escorts patients to front desk after exam.
- Assists with calling of patients ahead of their appointments to perform pre-screening and pre-loading of medical history and pharmacy data directly into the Electronic Health Record
Qualifications
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required
- High school graduate or GED
- Customer service skills
- Effective oral and written communication skills
- Basic computer skills
- Ability to assist wheelchair bound patients
- Ability to be on your feet for a possible 8-10 hour shift
- Manual dexterity to adjust eyeglasses, including skills to do basic frame repairs
- Ability to interpret a standard glasses prescription

Work Schedule
Monday - Thursday
This position is considered a full time position, approximately 32 hours per week.
Salary : $16 - $26
