Job Overview: Business development and operations leadership role at a large-scale composting facility responsible for managing a portfolio of existing customer partnerships, sourcing and developing new business ventures, and soliciting new customers. Leads and oversees food waste depackaging operations, offsite grinding and service operations ensuring safety, product quality, efficiency, and productivity.

  • Develops and evaluates new business categories and customers.
  • Manages existing portfolio of commercial and municipal customer partnerships managing bids, pricing, delivery and follow-up.
  • Accountable for business performance of onsite depackaging services, as well as collaboration with management team on customer sourcing and depackager operation.
  • Responsible for development of cable/hook truck organics collection services.
  • Collaborates with management team on business performance and operations of offsite wood grinding, yard waste, composting operations, and screening services. Inclusive of hauling, subcontractor hiring, end-product sales and dispositioning, and new site negotiations.
  • Responsible for future development, business performance, operations, and team of onsite compost/blends and mulch bagging.
  • Develop and execute strategic plans to achieve sales targets.
  • Formulates revenue and expense budgets and capital expenditures.
  • Reviews monthly and quarterly reports and takes corrective actions to ensure revenues and expenditures are within budgetary goals.
  • Optimizes the operation, maintenance, and purchase decisions of a large fleet of capital equipment.
  • Administers policies and procedures. Ensures regulatory, compliance, and safety standards are followed, trained, and monitored.
  • Promotes Dakota Prairie Composting products and services as well as the SMSC vision and role in environmental stewardship through tradeshow presence, speaking engagements, and participation in professional organizations.
  • Works with Director and leadership team ensuring all areas are adequately staffed during fluctuating seasonal business levels and initiate adjustments as needed.
  • Collaborates with Marketing to generate sales, accelerate the brand, and attract more customers for products and services.
  • Interviews, selects, hires, and promotes employees, including training, development, performance management, and supervisory actions as needed.
  • Leads, mentors, coaches, and provides guidance, support, and motivation to their staff.

Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Business, Solid Waste Management, Soil Science, or other Environmental Field OR 7 or more years of experience in solid waste, composting, or organics recycling fields.
  • Customer relationship development and management experience.
  • Excellent communication and engagement skills – verbal, follow-through.
  • Knowledge and understanding of industrial composting and the value of using compost as a finished product.
  • 3 or more years supervisory experience.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work in a wide range of climate temperatures, including excessive heat and/or subzero temperatures.
  • Has the physical abilities to perform the required job duties with or without accommodations.
  • Proficiency in maintaining safety while handling potential fumes, chemicals, odors, and/or noise.
